Update from Alex Grenier on His Reconciliation with his Parents Who Sued Him

***

Earlier, I posted about the reconciliation between Alex Grenier and his parents. I don’t think I’ve ever done that before — reported on a situation that has a positive outcome. The thought of restored relationships after years of harm makes me cry. This has been so amazing. When I first got involved with Alex’s story and then formed a group to work on the “Who Would Jesus Sue” campaign to bring media attention to this story nearly 5 years ago, I don’t think I ever expected to see such a positive outcome. My thoughts were that hopefully Alex would win the court case, but I don’t think I ever imagined that something this beautiful could have occurred.

Alex is my friend. We have many things in common, and I love him like a brother. After he lost the first couple of rounds in the court process, I saw him change. I saw him go downhill spiritually and emotionally. He was angry (and rightly so). The new Alex was more cynical. I saw close his circle of friends get tighter. He became serious and driven, and he had to do things his own way. There were several friends I know who remained steadfast in their support of him, even though Alex sometimes lashed out.

About 6 months ago, I noticed a change in Alex. He wanted to prioritize the important things in his life: his family, his business, and I think it was around this time that he also wrestled with his God. For me, it was difficult to observe this long process over the years. I was watching the fruit of what happens when someone is harmed. We all know it can happen, but when you have been closely connected to someone, the sadness is real. You know there’s nothing you can do except continue to extend love and grace. You just hope and pray that your “brother” will get it all figured out. Alex is one tough dude and I knew he’d have to get hit hard (because he and are so alike). The nearly five years of legal battles, and all of the emotional and spiritual strain in his life, left him spent. He was done. And apparently, it was in this place where Alex was humble, and was able to find truth, love, and healing.  I love you, Alex.  I think this is your life verse, literally:

I have fought the good fight,

I have finished the race,

I have kept the faith.

BREAKING: Lawsuit between Calvary Chapel Visalia Pastor Bob Grenier and His Step-Son, Alex Grenier, Has Been Dropped

***

Many long-time readers will remember the ongoing lawsuit (nearly 4 years!) between Pastor Bob Grenier of Calvary Chapel Visalia (and his wife, Gayle) against his step-son Alex Grenier (son of Gayle). I have written many articles about this case over the years in support of Alex and consider him as friend.

I am happy to bring you this news which was originally reported on Michael Newnham’s blog, Phoenix Preacher. Michael has given me permission to copy it entirely.

Alex Grenier has informed me this morning that the lawsuit between his step father and mother and himself has been dropped.

No money has changed hands and true forgiveness and reconciliation has taken place.

We would ask that prayers for the whole family go forth as they resolve family issues and learn to love each other again.

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blpasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,  unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,  having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!  2 Tim 3:1-5

One year ago today, we heard the ruling from Judge Fun regarding the $500,000 defamation lawsuit against me and 4 other members (2 were later dropped).  We won!  I was away at a Christian summer camp serving as a counselor when we got the news and quickly got away for about an hour to share the news. Please continue to pray for Alex and Tim (and all the survivors of Calvary Chapel Visalia today).  The decision and formal hearing on their lawsuit will be today and tomorrow, March 4/5, 2013.  Another prayer request is that this case brings further exposure to the systemic abuse issues among Calvary Chapel churches so that positive changes can take place.  ~ja

We will soon hear the results of the final hearing (Monday/Tuesday) in the anti-SLAPP motion to halt the defamation lawsuit of Calvary Chapel Visalia (CCV) Pastor Bob Grenier and his wife, Gayle vs his step-son/her son, Alex Grenier and former CCV member Tim Taylor.

I have spent literally hours reading Alex and Tim’s story, the personal testimonies of former members, reading news articles, blog articles, audios of interviews/sermons.  What is going on in these churches?  Why are there so many similar stories of abuse, corruption, cover-ups?  Is there a pattern?  Why do leaders not deal appropriately with alleged abuse?  Why are leaders not held accountable?  Why do corrupt leaders stay in their positions of authority, while others are removed?  What is going on!!  At Spiritual Sounding Board, this is like a broken record, because we have been watching similar patterns since my case.

#WhoWouldJesusSue: Grenier Defamation Lawsuit Archive “Goes Live”

#WhoWouldJesusSue Campaign

PRESS RELEASE #2:
Breaking News Advisory

Extensive Archive on Grenier Defamation Lawsuit “Goes Live” Today – March 1, 2013.

A team of volunteers has put together a significant resource on the lawsuit of Grenier & Grenier v. Taylor & Grenier. The Grenier Defamation Lawsuit Archive contains such features as:

  • Key Facts: People, Dates, and Documents.
  • Media FAQs.
  • Historical Narrative of Alex Grenier’s Attempts to Hold Bob Grenier Accountable.
  • Bibliography on the Grenier Lawsuit, Calvary Chapel Franchise, and #WWJS? Campaign.
  • Tutorial on “Defamation/SLAPP Lawsuits for Dummies.”

It also includes press releases and other records from the #WhoWouldJesusSue media campaign related to this case.

The Archive is housed on Alex Grenier’s Calvary Chapel Abuse blog. He launched this blog in July 2010 “as my last resort” when all other attempts since 2004 have failed in confronting his step-father Bob over alleged child physical abuse inflicted on his sons, child sexual abuse of his son Paul, and “eccelesiastical corruption” at the church he has pastored since the 1970s.

According to Alex Grenier’s volunteer team: “The Archive writers and editors have sought to be as factual and fair as possible in presenting historical events and in representing all sides accurately. However, there is a distinct bias and the material here is written from the perspective of the defendants, Tim Taylor and Alex Grenier.”

This Archive is based on a similar one produced after the 2012 case of Beaverton Grace Bible Church v. Smith. In that defamation lawsuit, an Oregon pastor and his church sued five defendants for $500,000 for posting online Google Reviews and blog comments alleging church leadership to be “spiritually abusive.” An anti-SLAPP motion was filed and approved, ending that lawsuit as unsubstantiated and frivolous.

This defamation lawsuit was filed on October 17, 2012, by Bob Grenier, Pastor of Calvary Chapel Visalia (California), and his wife Gayle, alleging former church member Tim Taylor and step-son/son Alex Grenier committed “Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress,” “Defamation,” and “Conspiracy to Defame.”

An anti-SLAPP motion was filed on December 17, 2012, and a tentative decision on the matter is due from California Superior Court Judge Paul Anthony Vortmann. A tentative decision is due to be posted March 4, 2013, followed by a court hearing on March 5.

Official Website: Calvary Chapel Abuse, with its Grenier Defamation Lawsuit Archive.

Media Contact: Julie Anne Smith. Email: spiritualsb@gmail.com.

Ms. Smith was the main defendant in the 2012 Oregon case of Beaverton Grace Bible Church v. Smith. Her former pastor and church sued Ms. Smith and four other defendants for $500,000 over claims of defamatory statements posted online about spiritual abuse by the church and its leaders. As in this California case of Grenier & Grenier v. Taylor and Grenier, an anti-SLAPP motion was filed in BGBC v. Smith. So there are significant parallels between the two lawsuits. Ms. Smith now blogs at Spiritual Sounding Board, a site focused on advocacy for survivors of spiritually abusive pastors, churches, ministries, and movements.

Beware of False Prophets: By Their Fruits You Will Know Them

*          *          *          *          *

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

Please help me blow the bullhorn on Spiritual Abuse.  Right now we are focusing on Calvary Chapel churches.  Exposure is key.  Use that little Facebook button and Twitter button and send it out.  Let people know what is going on in churches that damage and destroy lives emotionally and spiritually.  Exposure makes change happen.  Silence prolongs it.

Last week has been a whirlwind of activity.   After spending five days in Vegas with my daughter for a volleyball tournament, we returned home Tuesday as a team was working very hard behind the scenes for the Media #WhoWouldJesusSue Blitz scheduled for last Thursday.

Here’s the background story on how this Media Blitz was started.  I try to keep tabs on media stories of church abuse issues.  There have been quite a few Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM) reports regarding their lawsuit, but what struck me about Alex and Tim’s lawsuit was that it hasn’t seen much media coverage at all.  I was disappointed at the last report I read written from a local news source near Visalia.  Think of what happened during the Penn State sex abuse cases.  It was like the media put a giant magnifying glass on top of that campus and there was massive exposure and media attention.  The media put pressure on that very bad system and forced Penn State to come clean.  That is what we want to happen in this Calvary Chapel lawsuit.  The story needs exposure so that the church is forced to look at their problems.

PRESS RELEASE #1: Breaking News Advisory

UPDATE: Decision postponed to March 4th with formal hearing March 5th (due to plaintiff’s attorney ‘scheduling conflict’) on suit by Calvary Chapel pastor against step-son and former member

Pastor Bob Grenier of Calvary Chapel Visalia (CCV), California, is suing Tim Taylor of Visalia and also one of his own step-sons, Alex Grenier of Idaho. He specifically contends that Taylor and Alex Grenier have committed “Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress,” “Defamation,” and “Conspiracy to Defame.” The defendants view this as a legal maneuver to intimidate and silence them and others from speaking out against sexual abuse, physical abuse, and ecclesiastical corruption they allege he perpetrated.

Calvary Chapel Visalia Lawsuit, Local News Article, Court Declaration

Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart. Col. 3:21

Last week I posted about the Calvary Chapel Visalia Pastor Bob Grenier and his wife, Gayle against their stepson/son Alex and former church member Tim. I mentioned Bob’s son, Paul’s court declaration and the very strong emotions I felt when reading it. I did not feel the liberty to publish his declaration. Shortly after publishing my article, Dee of Wartburg Watch published an article and included a few paragraphs from Paul’s declaration on her blog article and included a link to the rest of the court document. It is a very difficult read.
