Compelling Evidence that Vision Forum Inc. is Closing, Liquidating and Doug Phillips “Show” of Repentance Revealed

*      *      *

There is now overwhelming evidence that the for-profit arm of Vision Forum is indeed closing at the end of the year.  Also, there are public statements alluding Doug Phillips’ public statement of repentance was not genuine.

To save some time, I will relay each new development and brief summary in no particular order.  At the end of the post, I will post a timeline so you can see how it all fits together.

Compelling Evidence of the End-of-Year Closing of Vision Forum Business

The biggest news you may have heard is that T. W. Eston at Jen’s Gems is reporting that Vision Forum, Inc., the for-profit arm, will be closing effective December 31, 2013. I’ve asked Mr. Eston if he could provide source information and he has respectfully declined in order to preserve his sources’ anonymity.

Today there were two new comments confirming Eston’s assertions of Vision Forum, Inc., closing:

TnT Says:
November 29, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I have numerous friends who are employed by VFI and have been told they will no longer have a job as of Dec. 31st, 2013. Tis true indeed.

noturniptruck Says:
November 29, 2013 at 4:42 pm

ditto! I can also verify that!

This most recent comment is the most revealing, seemingly coming straight from Vision Forum:

mike race Says:
November 30, 2013 at 11:10 am

In an email my wife received this morning from Vision Forum it stated this near the bottom:
“By placing an order you will be participating in our inventory liquidation sale. This means great prices for you as we liquidate our entire remaining inventory. Due to the nature of this sale, all purchases are final and returns will no longer be accepted. This is your last opportunity to buy our books, CDs, DVDs, and toys for you and your family, so get them before they’re gone!”

Be sure to take a look at the post, because there is a lot of information – especially in the comments.  But please keep in mind that none of it is confirmed with identifiable sources.  I checked the Vision Forum site and the Vision Forum blog and there is no notice of this.

Incidentally, SSB blog reader loveoneanother, left this comment Monday:

Home School Enrichment Magazine just sent me a Black Friday ad for Vision Forum’s Catalog. I could see Vision Forum sending it to me, but another homeschool company? Doesn’t that seem like an inappropriate endorsement given the circumstances? Maybe I am reading into it too much!

loveoneanother forwarded the e-mail to me and I took a screenshot of part of it:

You can see similar ads on the Vision Forum, Inc., website.  I’ll keep you posted if I get more credible information.    (I guess it doesn’t bother this homeschool business to promote Vision Forum’s wares, even under the current circumstances.)

Today at the Vision Forum site they are announcing the last day of Black Friday sale with 50% off everything.  Maybe tomorrow will be 70% off everything?

San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival is Postponed for 2014

I’d like to bring your attention to another business venture (he’d probably say “ministry) of Phillips and Vision Forum.  In 2004, Doug Phillips founded the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival (SAICFF) which boasted of a competition with generous cash rewards (approximately $100,000).  Just 10 days before Phillips’ first public statement, the following announcement was posted on the SAICFF website and Facebook page:

Update Oct. 21, 2013: The Christian Filmmakers Academy and SAICFF for 2014 have been postponed. Due in part to financial concerns and for other reasons, the Board of Vision Forum Ministries is looking to bring greater accountability to our practices and events, and therefore is allowing more time before launching this significant event once again.  October 22

Did you catch the phrase, “financial concerns and for other reasons?”  Inquiring minds want to know what other reasons.

Some notable friends of Doug Phillips weighed in on the conversation on the Facebook page announcement as people expressed their sadness about the cancellation:

Were these men privy to Phillips’ personal affair and troubles?  I wonder if we will ever find out.

Voddie Baucham Reveals the Phillips Family Personal Damage Brought on by The “Esquire”

**

Voddie Baucham has revealed more information that I have not seen published elsewhere. (Baucham was the first to publicly confirm that Phillips was no longer teaching elder at Boerne Christian Assembly.)  A Facebook reader asked on Baucham’s Facebook page:

I am struggling with these questions as a homeschooling mom who has a huge amount of Vision Forum products in her home therefore has allowed my children to be taught by Doug Phillips. What do I tell them? That he was living a lie? Of course the Bible is the final authority on everything. Basically if you were to come forward with a similar confession what weight would all the books that you have written carry?

**

You can read the entire response here.  In the response, Baucham disclosed that Doug has lost his home due to the scandal:

**

Warn them about the cost of sin. Tell them how Doug has damaged his marriage, lost his home, collapsed his ministry, and devastated his family spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Tell them how the enemies of God are rejoicing right now; how people like you are in turmoil.

**

This was not any small home, but a 6,000 SF home.  Sadly, I predict a major lifestyle change for the Phillips family.

As of yet, no one has been willing to come forward and identify themselves publicly to share these kinds of details.   T.W. Eston (a pseudonym), who has recently begun submitting articles and responding to comments at Jen’s Gems blog, had this to say about the financial state that is to come upon the Phillips family.  Eston has been given this information by unnamed informants:

The board of directors has given until the end of the year for Doug and his family to move out of the ministry-owned house. The VFM board of directors will repossess (and may have already repossessed) any and all assets that Doug purchased with VFM monies for his personal use. This includes everything from automobiles, home furnishings, and perhaps even clothing. Some may view this as retaliatory on the part of the board (and perhaps it is to some degree), but the fact of the matter is they have a legal obligation to do everything they can to remedy any tax fraud and fiduciary malfeasance that Doug Phillips may have perpetrated.

The VFM board will be liquidating all VFM assets, including the house, home furnishings, office equipment and furnishings, all remaining inventory, and the Vision Forum office building at 4719 Blanco Road, San Antonio, starting January 1, 2014.

Vision Forum YouTube Videos

On the Vision Forum’s YouTube page, there are quite a few new videos which were uploaded late September and early October, just about a month before Phillip’s announced he was stepping down from Vision Forum Ministries in his public statement.  This is a screenshot of the page in case it disappears, but presently, you can see the videos here.  The videos uploaded were part of the Vision Forum, Inc., for-profit arm and are advertisements for products in the Vision Forum catalog.  Why would someone make the effort to produce a bunch of videos if they thought their business ship was sinking?  This action convinces me that Phillips had full intentions of keeping his Vision Forum business afloat.

Narcissists think like that.  Just like the captain of the Titanic, they think they are invincible.

*     *     *

In my snooping, I stumbled across something that could be part of the financial/business puzzle with regard to the Vision Forum business.  Vision Forum, Inc., had an affiliate program which was suspended late March of 2013.  This is what the website looked like before the program was suspended:    And this is what it looks like now:

*      *      *

Vision Forum, Doug Phillips, Homeschool Movement, Affair, Scandal,

*      *      *

This may or may not be significant, but I haven’t seen anyone discuss it and the new change occurred the month following Phillips stepping down or being forced out of his teaching elder position at Boerne Christian Assembly in February of 2013.

The Secret of Happiness in the Home

According to the FORGE (Families Obediently Restoring Godly Education) Ministries website, FORGE Ministries hosted a conference on September 5-7, 2013, in which Phillips spoke.   Phillips’ messages included:

**

Session 1: The Doctrine of Fatherhood From Genesis to Revelation, Doug Phillips

And get a load of this next title:

Session 7: The Secret of Happiness in the Home, Psalm 128. Doug Phillips

**

Do you think he canvassed his wife, Beall and his household to get a big “Amen” for that?

Ancient Greece Tour

Vision Forum offered an Ancient Greece Tour and posted about it on their website.  Phillips was slated to teach on the tour, but ended up not teaching.   Did something come to light between the publishing of the trip itinerary and the actual trip that prevented Phillips from teaching?  Here is an excerpt from the website indicating Phillips would be teaching:

The Lord answered our prayers by granting us a top-of-the-line cruise ship, dedicated to our group. The tour will be 9-10 days beginning in Istanbul, Turkey and ending in Athens. Your teachers will be Dr. Joe Morecraft, Bill Potter, and myself.

Public “Show” of Repentance by Doug Phillips

Last night, I posted an article, Doug Phillips: “Disowns” Former Vision Forum Executive Assistant to President, Peter Bradrick, Calls Him “Destroyer” When Confronted about Sins about Peter Bradrick coming out publicly on his Facebook page which he recently made public.  There is another revealing comment I found here from someone in the inner circle of Doug Phillips, Bob Renaud:

This is more clear evidence that Phillips has not repented as he has led us to believe by his two public statements.

  2. Well, the typical bombshell usually involves sex and $$. For others to claim he was not repentant and he brazenly claims he was is one of many signs. I’m still struck that he was even allowed access to the Vision Forum Ministries blog to post that 2nd statement. You’d think that if anything, one of the board would introduce his statement. By him posting, it gives the appearance that he is still someone in charge – at least in some capacity – – that he is not willing to give up his post. That’s typical behavior for an abuser lacking in humility. The 2nd statement was basically a defensive pose and then telling everybody to quit talking about it with just enough foo-foo in there to give people the impression that he’s disclosing real pertinent information – – ‘oh, yea, there was an element of physical nature in our relationship – oopsy, forgot that part . . . . oh wait, but it still wasn’t the Biblical “know.”‘ Give me a break!

The reality is that the Bible discusses these bozos. It should not come as a surprise, but it does hit when you have invested so much into a ministry, etc.

“For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.” (Jude 4)

“Jude 4 is the Greek noun aselgeia, “lack of self-constraint which involves one in conduct that violates all bounds of what is socially acceptable, self-abandonment” (http://www.jesuswalk.com/2peter/4_false.htm)

“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

But in the video we saw yesterday about the couple, she did say that it was brought to the church so maybe someone can clarify this.

I totally agree Julie Anne. I think he may actually believe that garbage about the ELECT and that he IS one of them, therefore, in his mind, he can do nothing to lose his status. His messed-up theology was pushed more and more as time went on…. Hyper Calvinist/Post Millennial/dominion junk. BTW, I wish someone could look into when he and Geoffrey (check his background) got chummy.

  10. When you put this statement by Peter Bradrick;

“When those who champion “women and children first” hide behind smooth words instead of “suffering for the weak”… When the strong take advantage of the weak, and then turn them out like so much garbage… When the strong seize the lifeboats and leave the weak drowning in the icy water… it leaves no choice for men of God other than to rise up and oppose them when they discover the truth. Woe to those that do not.”

    …Together with this statement by Bob Renaud;

“We are not going to sit by and allow the weak to be victimized.”

….It certainly paints a picture of predator and prey, now doesn’t it?

Something beyond a mutually consenting affair happened here. There’s a clear victim (or victims). Doug Phillips left someone “drowning in icy water” and “turned them out like so much garbage.”

    – Geoff Botkin wrote into his Great 200 Year Plan not only his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, but their “estates” (not mere homes) and “house servants” as well!!!

So yeah, its safe to say that these rock star preachers see themselves as members of some sort of elitist group. I mean the word “dominionist” pretty much sums it up.

Also, it was either on this blog or a blog I found through this blog that someone commented about Victoria Botkin’s request NOT to be photographed, even with her family. I immediately thought Geoff must’ve told her not because it doesn’t reflect well on his image. I mean, he’s a good looking guy for his age and he wears pretty sharp clothing (black turtlenecks which appear to compliment his features), and his two daughters, who are the commercial faces of the Botkin Empire, are knockouts. Then you see his wife, who is, sorry to say and god bless her heart, one of the frumpiest women I have ever seen in my life – for ANY age, and well, it just doesn’t fit the image King Botkin wants to project.

  15. He lectures on fatherhood in the Bible? Somehow, I don’t thing these texts below will be part of his lecture.

Jesus and Peter condemns people for following their fathers:
Luk 11:47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
Luk 11:48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
    1Pe 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
And the one passage I think Doug will never use in context, Jesus on fatherhood and authority::
Mat 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
Mat 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

  17. I’ve seen dozens of pics of Papa Botkin flanked by his two hot young daughters and barely any where he is flanked by his wife. There are a few pictures of him and his wife with the entire family, but none with him and his wife alone as a loving couple. On the hand you see tons of pics of his two married sons showing affection to their wives in photos, even kissing them. But even in the family photos where Papa Botkin is standing near to his wife, the body language is cold. On the other hand the pics with his daughters…….

Quite frankly I think he’s not attracted to his wife and is even embarrassed of her. I have read that their marriage was “arranged” by the leaders of the previous cult he was a member of “The Great Commission”. They do appear sorely mismatched, not only in looks but in “vibe”.

My theory is that despite praying over the ovaries of his daughters when they were infants that they would be the future progenitors of “millions”, he has not, and will not, allow them to marry because he gets his motivation from their feminine energy. Like a sort of energy vampire, if you will.

I guarantee you that if his wife were “hot” and a vibrational match to his own energies, that those two Botkin girls would have been married off by 22, whether they desired to be or not, and his hot wife would have been the official commercial face of the Botkin Empire.

    Prove me wrong!
    Ha ha.

  20. “FYI, my aunt knew the Botkin family in her teens (so I sincerely doubt an arranged marriage) ”

Right. I am speculating, no doubt. But both Victoria and Geoff joined the The Great Commission in their youth as singletons, right? So perhaps the cult leaders thought because they knew each other previously they might make a good match and suggested it to them.

” His daughters are absolutely stunning – they can’t help but draw attention because of their beauty.”

They are beautiful but I’ve notice they are showing signs of aging now. The elder one is 30, the younger, 28. They are clearly “old maids” and “spinsters” by their particular sub-cultural standards of “marry young and have tons of kids while you’re in your peak fertility years”.

I also speculate that they are feminists of some sort who never wanted to marry and compromise their “space” and “freedom” for some dude. However since “anti-feminism” is such a major theme in their cult, they can’t come out and say, “you know what, we never wanted to marry because we like our lives the way they are and ‘don’t need no man’ “… so they invented this whole new “Stay At Home Daughters” theory as a sort of cover and justification.

On the other hand who knows – maybe they do want to marry but like I wrote above, Papa Botkin thwarts all attempts because he wants to milk their youth and beauty for all its worth for his empire. If that’s the case it truly is sad because its harder for women to marry once they get past a certain age and lose their looks and fertility. (Same with men too by the way, despite what “the Manosphere” claims about never married or divorced wrinkly old dudes post 50 being in their “prime years”.)

Any emotion that those women may have felt about their friend’s marriages would have been carefully hidden….even in their eyes…before any public statement would have been allowed. Any “takes” for the movie were carefully rehearsed until they “got it right”, meaning devoid of any emotion at all. That is the MO of these cults. Only God knows what “bitter words they have spoken into the night”…..for only in the cover of darkness, only in the silence of the midnight hours, are these women free to think any thought not “approved by daddy”. So very, very sad.

  23. Re: Dismantling the Affiliate Program

This is what Amazon did too. I don’t see terminating the affiliate program as an admission of Vision Forum moral guilt, but it might be an indication of huge tax bills totaling 6 or 7 figures that they didn’t expect.

Ending the program was probably done because affiliate programs create a tax nexus in a lot of states (about 13 states right now – including Pennsylvania, Illinois, and California, which are major homeschool states).

Those states with affiliate nexus laws will demand sales tax for every sale made into that state retroactively, whether made through an affiliate or not. That’s a big chunk of change for a company like Vision Forum that sells so much direct.

Those states are probably asking for sales taxes going back for several years, depending on when the legislation was passed in each state. For a company the size of VF, this could mean they owe 6 figures annually for the past several years. And those states demand payment now, whether VF collected sales tax or not on the original purchase.

Phillips has no excuse for not knowing about affiliate tax nexuses. It’s been a major topic for online retailers for several years.

Let’s hope the bizarre behavior can be attributed to “acting” for the sake of the camera. These unnatural father-daughter relationships fostered by having girls practice their helpmeet skills though service to Daddy are very worrisome. I’m still feeling queasy after viewing video of a group activity involving girls shaving their father’s beards.

Dottie, I mentioned this before but it warrants mentioning again. In South Asian culture, their is a similar dynamic going on between mothers and sons. Throughout South Asia the male children live with their parents their entire lives, even after marriage. If the parents’ home is small with limited space, at least 1 of the sons will live with them if the others move out. This is because daughters are married out and go to live with their in-laws while sons bring their wives home to live with them and their parents in the “joint family home”. The reason for this is that it is considered the duty of a son to “take care of his parents” in their old age. He is also to take over as the main provider of the household once he reaches adulthood and gets established in his career. That is how traditional South Asian society and family structure is set up.

Anyway, this being the case you see a lot of preference for sons over daughters. Sons also get spoiled and pampered. And an almost borderline romantic relationship develops between mothers and their sons. You do not see husbands and wives displaying physical affection like you see mothers and their sons, even their adult sons, doing so.

This also creates a lot of drama once those sons get married (the bride is usually picked out by the mother) and bring their wives home to live with their parents. The son is not expected to show more affection to his wife than to his mother. If he does, the mothers get jealous and angry.

I grieve for those he has wounded and for those who are now jobless as a result of his ‘needs’. God heal them all!

WomanforFreedom: Welcome to the blog. Thanks for giving us this information. Wow, 8,000 SF is a absolutely huge. You’re right – – it’s time to grieve and pray for all of those families who will be jobless due to his horrific sins. There are so many victims in this situation – – – and he had the audacity to offer a “clarification” to his statement. Give me a break.

  31. I agree Julie Anne- I mean look I run /drive by their house every single day the last few years and yes we are very blessed to live there…. Of course we pay a mortgage and taxes which they don’t . I can’t even begin to describe even the non hidden creepiness that goes on there. None of us can understand why Jim Leinenger would have given him that home much less ALL the money , which by the way why is nobody discussing Jim ? Does anyone know his position on all of this?? I haven’t spoken to Jim since they gave away the house which had previously been on the market for just under a million. They used to go to our church too until the phillipites moved to town. But I can tell you this on any given day I saw so many young unmarried girls over there ‘training’ for free . And the audacity of Beall to reign like the queen on high was apparent to everyone of the neighbors. Not to mention how’s my times I saw Jennifer G’s vehicle over there when it jus so happened Beall would leave her kingdom . I go from angry to grieving to amazement at the audacity of this man and frustration that it ha taken this long to ‘come out’ . I know a poor family who got sucked into working for the ministry . He made barely over minimum wage , his wife had no car and when I went to visit her one day I realized they had no food , the babies had no cribs, they had no toys and lived in a trailer . I got women from my church to donate items to her, and when Doug found out, he made them return all items. And said I was trying to create enmity between husband and wife and she believed it. They quickly left our church. So I have been watching from the sidelines and this goes way beyond all the horror stories we already know as fact. Anyway I appreciate you allowing me to post . I’m sorry if I seem to angry. I’ve just been fed up with his bs for too long, but what do I know … I’m just ‘full of the spirit of Jezebel ‘ lol. Give me a break . Thank you for shedding light to this. I hope there are severe consequences to bring him to a heap at the cross begging forgiveness to all he has bullied and wounded and allowed to be preyed upon.

  35. Dave A A you’re exactly right. Not sure if you know much about San Antonio but with the exception of the Phillips and my family , though some are , it is a Roman Catholic city and the Phillips are the only ones who haven’t lived in the street for at least over a decade . The testimony that family gave to Protestantism, which I’d say they actually aren’t because you have to preach the gospel to be Protestant, was humiliating. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard “if that’s Protestantism or Christianity , we want nooooothing to do with it” the city counsel was repeatedly appealed to about what we all could see was ‘slave’ like labor going on because these kids were chatty . Not all knew about Jennifer G., I just happened to know her so knew who it was over there and on several occasions let her know if she came near my family or house I would call the cops. I appealed to Beall and Doug and they would shut the door in my face . They’d sneer at me in my -gasp – running shorts. And I got called all sorts of names by their families who’d be there visiting if I walked by with my dogs. This street HAS been banging our heads against the wall. I AM a reformed Christian Protestant and am ashamed at what I witnessed . See it’s a small small town in the middle of a larger San Antonio, kind of like an egg yolk. And we couldn’t escape the weirdness of ‘the cult’ as they are known here. I realize in the homeschool world he had tons of influence and power . In the real world , it was obvious he was a wolf in Sheeps clothing and he exerted zero influence. And it piiiiiiiised him off lol.

  36. WomanforFreedom: What you describe is completely opposite of the image I had in my mind of this family. It’s hard to imagine how this family carried on like this for so long without it slipping out. But I believe you – – the same kind of thing happened with my former pastor.

It’s interesting that Peter Bradrick had never dealt with the “other” side of Phillips until the group of men went to confront Phillips:

What for us was a tender, emotional, mission of mercy and plea for true repentance was met with something, and by someone I never could have imagined. Instead of being received as the “wounds of a friend” (Proverbs 27:6), I was formally disowned and declared to be a “destroyer” to my face.

During one of our meetings with our pastor – we had over 15 hours of meetings over several days period of time – my husband said something that Chuck misunderstood and something set him off. He had a look of anger in his eyes that I had never seen before – it was something of pure evil. This is the behavior of a narcissist. When encountering someone like this it is very frightening. I knew at that point, it didn’t matter if he had the right answers to our questions or not, no man of God would ever respond in such a way. This was evil from the pit of hell. There was no reason to stay anymore and that evil outburst sealed the deal for us.

It’s very interesting for me to compare Phillips to my former pastor – – when just looking at their behavior, it’s like they were twins and separated at birth.

  37. Julie Anne I had to assume he was completely different at church because you’re right who would go to a pastor like that?? It was easy for us to not be sucked in but as many have pointed out abusers use fear ,shame, and rewards/ punishments to keep people following him and his glossy photos and catalogues and conferences would’ve never revealed the slimy side of a few of these folks . And if anyone spoke up they were accused of gossip or like me who was an outsider I was just marginalized as a feminist heathen. Which is such a joke. The good news is there can be healing. I’m sorry for any and all who were sucked in. I’m grateful to God we saw it coming , but we had seen spiritual abuse before like you have so we knew what to look for. I pray that God will use this disgusting event/events to reveal Hia goodness and that these poor broken people will find the true Freedom in the Gospel. Our hope isn’t here , thank you God!!! That’s why healing can happen and those who were blind can see. There’s a couple of really good spiritual abuse counselors here locally that are prepared to take these people if they reach out. God will be glorified and I’ve been praying these peoples eyes would be open. I’m sorry for the hurt. I’m not sorry for the destruction of King Phillips control.

  38. WomanforFreedom – -Are those counselors aware of the situation? If you feel comfortable, could you e-mail the names/#s to me? I have been getting people e-mail me privately and I would love to be able to have a place to send them. I just hate that this nightmare has been going on for so long. Another coincidence, when I left cult church, people contacted me from over 10 years earlier and told me stories. Again, isn’t it crazy how long something like this can be hidden! They are masterful at keeping things under wraps from the right people.

But I see God using it for good as you are able now to reach out to others and help in the healing process . I know one counselor is at least fairly aware of exact problem. The other is one who will have heard but deals with all kinds of trauma , sexual, ritual , spiritual abuse. I’ve gotten great healing through him. 40. WomanforFreedom,

Are any of the churches in San Antonio, whether Catholic, Orthodox and/or Protestant, stepping up to the plate on all of this? Are they speaking out? Are they reaching out?

It may be unfair if people were using the situation with DP to condemn Christianity or Protestantism generally, but I would contend that criticism is well earned to the extent there is failure to step up, speak out and reach out. Actually, given the scope of DP’s influence, the churches in America generally, and especially evangelical churches, should at least be speaking out. Their failure to do so leaves them looking a good deal like religious leaders who would leave a robbed and beaten man to die on the road to Jericho.

  41. There are a few Gary. The Catholics won’t touch the issue because they don’t care about cult stuff except for how it has affected their viewpoints on Protestantism . But from what I understand the local more ‘reformed ‘ type churches are reaching out to varying degrees while not wanting to ‘scare’ these wounded people . A lot of these people are still blind and still think it isn’t or couldn’t possibly be true. But it’s a slow process that’s attempting to be handled. We are all churches full of sinners and are far from perfect. No one is quite sure how to attempt to lead a mass exodus of sorts but I can assure you many women are reaching out to the women and slowly starting there. There are churches here more than willing to take on the broken. I look forward to the day true healing behind but it’s tough right now. There’s still a pretty big wall of support for this creepo. It’s kind of like leading ppl out of flds. They are scared and if pushed think you are just another cult. So we are all being careful. Wish there was some kind of spiritual abuse national guard that could come in ;).

  43. WomanforFreedom,

What you report about those who are reaching out as best they can is actually quite encouraging. Recognizing that much is likely going on that you have not mentioned, I find it significant that the people you describe as reaching out are women.

As to your observation that we are all churches full of sinners, yes I agree. However, I also think that if we stop with that observation, and if we do not get to a full recognition of and belief in the sanctifying and transforming power of the Holy Spirit, we disarm ourselves. This observation is not meant as criticism, just as something that may be worth thinking about.

    Like

  44. Thank you Gary I don’t take your observations as criticism . I completely agree. In my role , I find it very easy to get women mobilized and we are. I’m privy to other workings and trust me nobody believes stronger than I do that though we acknowledge ourselves as sinners , I’m leading at least a weekly charge of “yes this is ugly but ….”I’m being heard and not treated as over reacting . Pastors here are taking it very seriously (at least 2 for sure and a couple of elders ) . The women are the most vocal right now of their fear and hurt and that’s where we come in. God prepared some of us a loooong time ago with our own abuse to equip us with the empathy and great and wonderful loving husbands who listen and regard what we say and encourage. This will take a long time because it’s not all out yet and he’s still here . But people pray for the wounded ! Pray for those of us who are trying to minister ! We need prayer ! God is bigger than all of this . He’s guiding our steps and our hearts and the Gospel is getting delivered despite our sinful selves. Thank you for your encouragement. This really is gonna take a lot of people.

  45. Thank you so much WomanforFreedom for speaking out!! What is often forgotten is that Doug’s reach went far beyond Texas, we are dealing with the fallout from this all across the nation. I have homeschooled over 12 years in three different states and I have seen the devastating results of his teaching in all three. PLEASE continue to bring these facts out.

Some were very upset by the mentioning of Mrs. Grady’s name but details like this are necessary if we are to convince all the victims. Remember we, on the local end of things, are trying to free people from these bonds. MANY believe Doug had a sin of the heart with only one woman without any sex taking place. They do not understand the full extent of this and will remain in bondage without facts. We have young women not allowed a full education. I personally know several families with girls over 16 who were not taught any math after basic long division so they would be good wives and mothers. They are trapped in their home without education, without jobs simply waiting as their lives go by. These are people I care about, people I worshipped with in my own home and broke bread with several times a week. I want to start reaching out to my old friends again to free these young people and their parents but we need to be informed. We need details so they can begin to see truth!

    Once again thank you!!

  49. I am very troubled by what I am reading here, Julie Anne sort of knows me online from PP which has sort of become my main support in this world. They listen well read my rants or at least they just let me rant and say some pretty silly even conspiratorial at times self deprecating which is actually me being passive aggressive.

I have been on the receiving end of the light switch type leaders who can change on a dime and really come after you. I bluffed a few times and I am glad they did not call me on it but for the most part I lack the integrity to fight them because the Christian religion means so much to me. I am much more aggressive in the political realm where I know the rules and public comment is a right and can be backed up by the law. I often think religious groups need some type of Brown Act.

I never got the whole women cant be pastors nonsense and created order fatherhood type chest pounding. I asked this question a few times, one time the persons head almost exploded they were so upset. I asked “God forbid but as an example your house was on fire and your kids and wife were trapped, would care if the firefighters were women, gay, catholic, JW, Atheist, Wiccans that danced around a tree nude on the full moon (which they dont by the way), fill in the blank; or would you care that they were well trained and brave people?

I E you pray but you still call 911, wear a seat belt, go do the doctor, wait for the green light and so on. It is the absolutism that bothers me, personally I want oversight, I want to be watched, I even tell on myself to my boss when I think I did something wrong, they think Im nutz at times for that. I even write myself up at work and insist it goes in my personal file (which they cant do). But I was sort of rude to a student onetime because she lost an expensive piece of equipment and I felt I spoke to her a bit harsh, no foul language of course just a bit more harsh. and it bothered me for a few hours and I asked the student if she felt that way and she said yes so I helped her fill out the complaint form. The student and my supervisor felt I was a bit to dramatic but what good is it to teach someone to stand up for themselves then use your authority to keep them from doing so?

Correction is good, I got some today and at first I balked then I said, wow this parent is right and is making a very good point. So I look back to Mr. Phillips 8000 square feet, I can guarantee if I had that house donated to me it would be a respite care facility for folks with disabilities and I would think I was in heaven if I could live there and just serve until I drop dead, then go to heaven God willing and do it again. Im just strange that way. I would have BBQ’s and invite all the neighbors. I would pay my labor a minimum of 2$ over minimum wage, offer health care if possible, educational opportunities and an open door prayer section where people show up any time of the day or night to just pray or need a place to stay, with limits of course.

I would listen to my neighbors and sew (sp) into their lives so we together could paint a beautiful legacy that would outlive us. Abuse would be dealt with publicly and promptly with justice, mercy and with open honest transparency. The wounded would be bound up and we would ooze joy. Children would be taught to say NO in very direct terms, they would be taught to protect themselves from potential threats and spiritual abuse. They would be taught to question but with respect and a balance of autonomy and “obedience” would be reflected in the way they were treated. We would live our testimony as best we could, be slow to speak and quick to hear. It would be a blast and a light. If there were gates on the house and a fence we would have a neighborhood tear it down party, if I saw someone jogging in shorts I would mind my own business and say good morning because people who jog get hot and sweat and Texas can be hot.

Women would be equals in every aspect of running this dream home, teach preach, do the dishes along with men and kids. Demeaning rhetoric would be dealt with. Freedom in Christ would reign supreme. We would pray for each other and confess our sins (within reason) to each other and above all we would love the people we are serving and just get out of God’s way. Thats what I would do if a house was ever given to me, thats what I did the last time I lived in a house that was given to an organization I was involved in and it was sheer poetry.

When Mr. Phillips moves out, that is what I wish for this house a place of healing and grace to rise above a beacon to the Risen Christ we say we serve even if it is just darkly viewed as in a mirror. Oh and we would have well drafted policies and an open, elected accountable board of directors, best practices and at every meeting of the board, public comment.

I agree all victims names should be kept private but the predators should not receive the same courtesy. It is that silence that allows them to continue to abuse, if their names are not blasted everywhere they are more likely to simply pick up shop and begin again. That is the beauty of the internet, you can look up a church or a pastor or any other individual and see what you find before you get involved. Both Jennifer G. and Doug Phillips will have a hard time doing what they have done to others with all that has been written. Also I understand there are things posted about Scott Brown from a church he was involved with prior to joining with Doug, and it is not favorable. I wish my husband and I had simply googled his name prior to starting a family-integrated church it was all there we just did not do our homework.
