ABUSE & VIOLENCE IN THE CHURCH

Embracing Truth in Times of Conflict

In 2008, there was a group of us who left the cult we were in for 2 years. We left friends behind in the cult. When we tried to reach out to them to share our concerns, we were shunned. They turned against us.

Despite the fact that we shared the truth and that we loved and cared for them, they continued to believe the cult leader/pastor and went along with what he said to shun us. He even convinced them to leave dishonest notes about us on strangers’ car windshields in mall parking lots, etc. (yes, that is cult-like behavior).

We grieved the loss of those friends and hoped that one day they would see the truth. Years later, many did, and they, too left the cult. It was awkward at first getting reconnected with them. Because for some time, they treated us like we were enemies.

But I have to say that all of us who waited for them to leave genuinely and warmly accepted them with open arms. We were thrilled that they were finally safe.

Here’s the deal: it was the truth that set them free. When they could no longer deny the truth, they had to do something or else continue to live in a world of cognitive dissonance and confusion. They chose truth.

My goal when posting is to always share the truth. I’m human and I may be wrong sometimes, but ever since living in a cult and experiencing various kinds of abuse in my life, my heart’s goal is to defend and protect the marginalized and innocent and speak truth.

We all come to our own conclusions on religion, social issues, politics, etc., based on many factors. During this time of political instability, I urge you to continue seeking the truth. Don’t settle for answers that don’t make sense. Keep your ears and eyes open. Keep testing to see if what you believe or hear is the truth. We all need to be in this together!

Peace, friends ❤

  1. I don’t believe President Trump is a believer. I don’t believe President Biden is a believer. I tend to think that most of our presidents have been cultural Christians; not heartfelt believers.

  2. Thanks, Julie Anne. Spot on as usual. When Christians can’t recognize the truth we are all in trouble. Still praying for friends to see the light on a few things.
