Psalm 46

God is our refugeĀ and strength, an ever-presentĀ helpĀ in trouble. Therefore we will not fear,Ā though the earth give way and the mountains fallĀ into the heart of the sea, though its waters roarĀ and foam and the mountains quakeĀ with their surging.

There is a riverĀ whose streamsĀ make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most HighĀ dwells. God is within her,Ā she will not fall; God will helpĀ her at break of day. NationsĀ are in uproar,Ā kingdomsĀ fall; he lifts his voice,Ā the earth melts.

TheĀ LordĀ AlmightyĀ is with us; the God of JacobĀ is our fortress.

Come and see what theĀ LordĀ has done, the desolationsĀ he has brought on the earth. He makes warsĀ cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bowĀ and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, ā€œBe still, and know that I am God; I will be exaltedĀ among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.ā€

TheĀ LordĀ Almighty is with us; the God of JacobĀ is our fortress.

I John 1: 1 – 10

That which was from the beginning,Ā which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,Ā which we have looked at and our hands have touched — this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.Ā The life appeared;Ā we have seen it and testify to it,Ā and we proclaim to you the eternal life,Ā which was with the Father and has appeared to us.Ā We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,Ā so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.Ā We write thisĀ to make our joy complete.

This is the message we have heardĀ from him and declare to you: God is light;Ā in him there is no darkness at all.Ā If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,Ā we lie and do not live out the truth.Ā But if we walk in the light,Ā as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin,Ā we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.Ā If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sinsĀ and purify us from all unrighteousness.Ā If we claim we have not sinned,Ā we make him out to be a liarĀ and his word is not in us.

Mark 10: 23 – 31

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ā€œHow hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!ā€

The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again,Ā ā€œChildren, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!Ā It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.ā€

The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, ā€œWho then can be saved?ā€

Jesus looked at them and said,Ā ā€œWith man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.ā€

Then Peter spoke up, ā€œWe have left everything to follow you!ā€

ā€œTruly I tell you,ā€Ā Jesus replied,Ā ā€œno one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as muchĀ in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields — along with persecutions — and in the age to comeĀ eternal life.Ā But many who are first will be last, and the last first.ā€

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you from the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.
