SSB Sunday Gathering – May 19, 2019

Spiritual Sounding Board – This is your place to gather and share in an open format.

-by Kathi

Scripture is taken from the Book of Common Prayer, Readings for Easter Season, Year 1 and may be found here.

Psalm 84

How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young — a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob. Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one.

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.

2 Thessalonians 2: 13 – 17

But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Matthew 7: 7 – 14

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you from the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.

  2. @JPU, “My rhubarb is sprouting.”

    How exciting JPU……love rhubarb, esp. when made into “Rhubarb custard pie” (my mother makes the best ever 🙂 ) What do you do with your tasty crop of delightful and healthful delicacies?

    Blessings to you.

  3. JPU – That’s right, it was Victoria Day for you in Canada! Why is Canada the only country to celebrate Victoria’s birthday?

    This coming weekend is our long weekend in the U.S. – Memorial Day weekend.

  4. I know it’s mid-week already but a close friend of mine lost her dad this morning and she’s devastated. She could use your prayers.

    And thanks for keeping the Sunday gatherings going Kathi.and JA. I’ve given it some thought and unless anyone has any objections I’m just going to pipe in with whatever going forward, related or not. cheers.

    In a broader sense, I’ve always felt this verse means “The best solution is not always the easiest or most obvious one.”

  6. Hi David – I’m so sorry for your friend’s loss. Grief can be overwhelming. I hope she finds moments of peace at the time she needs it.

    Thanks for being open to commenting here when you feel like it. I know it’s not an ideal spot for you. This space is meant to be more for sharing other thoughts and concerns outside of the regular posts, so I hope that’s at least helpful. Honestly, sometimes the Sunday morning posts are the hardest for me to put together.

  7. Kathi, thanks for all you work!
    For what it’s worth, I might be willing to try an occasional Sunday gathering post as long as everyone is OK with 1) the occasional hint of irreverent humor; 2) a completely agnostic and uneducated interpretation of Scripture with a wide-ranging and liberal application of opinion; 3) 2-3 paragraphs, max; AND 4) music that is more blues and soul-rock oriented. Lemme know. cheers
