Luke 7: 1-17

When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal the servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel. Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out – the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

Micah 6: 8

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you from the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.

  1. I love this scripture passage — well, all of the accounts of Jesus healing and having compassion, for that matter. In so many churches, they put so much emphasis the Jesus who was born in a stable and died on the cross for our sins, that they don’t teach the Jesus who had compassion on the sick, the bereaved, the hungry, the outcast, etc. Why would anyone want to trust Jesus if we don’t tell them who he is?

  2. This is a beautiful example of how Christ saw people who hurt and responded with action and compassion: “His heart went out to her.” And there you go!

    Thank you, Kathi.

  3. Reading this and many other accounts of Jesus healing makes me cry. If you want a good read, I recommend, “When a Woman Meets Jesus” by Dorothy Valcarcel. Jesus truly loves us!!!!!

  4. This afternoon, I begin my psychotherapy for my Complex PTSD using Prolonged Exposure Therapy. It will last about 3 month and will be hard and painful, as they will force me to relive the trauma repeatedly, in order to reduce the pain of those memories through repeated exposure. Here’s a link describing it. The VA doesn’t offer EMDR therapy. I tried.

  8. Thanks, Kathi and Brenda. I appreciate your prayers and concern. I went yesterday, and it was more stressful than I anticipated. This is hard and painful, but it needs to be done. In order to heal, you have to dig deep into a festering wound, in order to clean it out.
