C.J. Mahaney, Sex Abuse, Failure to Report, Statute of Limitations, Sovereign Grace Ministries, Lawsuit, Pedophiles, T4G
The Washingtonian released a new article after spending many months investigating Sovereign Grace Ministries, CJ Mahaney, and the many cases of alleged sex abuse named in the lawsuit brought on by victims (named and anonymous). The Washingtonian article is fee-based, but Bob Allen from Baptist News Global reported on the story in his article, Tale of evangelical sex scandal hits Washington newsstands. Here is an excerpt from Allen’s article:
A class action lawsuit accusing Mahaney and other Sovereign Grace leaders of covering up sexual abuse of children was dismissed by a trial court because Maryland law requires sex abuse victims to file lawsuits within three years of turning 18.
The Washingtonian quoted Susan Burke, the lawyer who represented the alleged victims in Maryland, saying she still plans to file another lawsuit on behalf of clients making similar allegations in Virginia.
Mahaney denied claims against him in the lawsuit in 2014 but said he couldn’t speak specifically because of the pending lawsuit. “I look forward to the day when I can speak freely,” Mahaney said in a statement released May 22, 2014.
C.J. Mahaney has been going on with life as normal, and his speaking engagements have been building up lately, with full approval of his celebrity Christian leader friends who have supported him all these years.
Previously, he was laying low while the scandal was in the spotlight. He is currently slated to speak with his BFFs at the upcoming Together for the Gospel 2016 conference (along with plenary speakers: Albert Mohler, Ligon Duncan, Thabiti Anyabwile, John MacArthur, David Platt, Matt Chandler, Kevin DeYoung, and R.C. Sproul).
Sorry, C.J., the spotlight may have been dimmed for a while, but those of us who have been following this case will not stop putting you and your failure to protect those in your care in the cyber spotlight.
Speaking of spotlight – I wonder if C.J. Mahaney has seen the movie, Spotlight?
C.J. Mahaney could have written the script from a Protestant perspective. I believe he knows it well.

I want the lawsuit to work. As I penned in my blog yesterday someone really needs to serve time and settlements need to be so massive that they force change. That’s what happened in the Catholic church. The beauty of this article is it came out just in time for T4G.

May the cyber spotlight shine C.J and on his whole network of frauds, enough is enough, time to give victims their due, these men need to pay. If not now, their day is coming, may they hang their heads in shame for their crimes against the precious innocents.

Considering the nearly universal recidivism rates for sexual predators, there should be no statute of limitations for sexual crimes, at least towards minors. I hope this latest lawsuit brings light to the hidden things…and to a wide audience.

A quote from spotlight “it could have been you, it could have me me, it could have been any of us” in the case of CJ Mahaney -SGM. He was the Sr Pastor who covered up all the sexual abuse. Then left his church and everyone he pastored without any discussion/explanation.
It was ALL of us he Betrayed. He ran away from his church. He lied and then he ran from his criminal sexual abuse coverup. We will not forget!

Looking at the roster of celebrity presenters scheduled for the T4G16 conference, I cannot help but think that I am viewing a rogues gallery of men (there are no women) who are hell bent for Jericho–men who are smugly confident in the validity supposed power of the propositional truths they espouse, while studiously ignoring and passing by all who have been emotionally, spiritually, and even physically robbed, beaten, stripped naked, and left to die. It’s just that these men commit the additional outrage of embracing the perpetrators, who they claim as their very own.

Persephone – Good point! If the abuse happened to a young child who was not able to have a voice to speak up for what he/she wanted and the parents decide not to do anything about it, then the years can fly by. Or, if the parents were to have had a financial settlement to avoid court, then that adult child should still be able to have the chance to have their voice heard and their day in court since they had no ability to be a part of that decision making process.

I know! Amazing. I live at ground zero so I can tell you that these young men act like I did in high school when the Rolling Stones came to town. It is uncanny and quite scary. You would not believe it. Many spend their last dime to come if their church is not paying. It just feels of cult behavior.

Sorry here folks, to look at C.J. Mahaney, there is just something about him that looks evil to me. My swine look more innocent and exhibit less religious sociopathic tendencies that this man pretending to be god. And to think that I was one of the wool-less sheep paying big bucks to attend conferences and listen to men and women such as these…..all the while trying to fit in and win acceptance with the religious women power brokers within my former church.
Read a penned publication or attend a ‘big name’ conference promoted by leadership and ‘win a friend’ to lord over your life.
Read the Bible for yourself and follow Jesus and His teachings and ‘lose your love bombing church friends’ who don’t respect you having a mind of your own and a personal relationship with Christ outside of their religious military industrial complex.

Thanks HUG, your poem reminds me of that famed monthly holiday within orchestrated religion, called “Pastor Appreciation Month.” I believe this annual designated holy month, not to out-do Ramadan of course, is held in October here in the west. It gives us lower laity the opportunity to kiss up (to earn more favor from the man of course in building our own secret alliance with him) and shower the pastor/his wife and family with monetary gifts, free home cooked meals delivered to their home, a feast at the church building where a “roast” is held in which all of us have two minutes of fame in bragging up how the p’astor and family has m’inistered to us in some grandiose way, to pray and pray some more for the pastor and his family above the needs of the struggling laity, and to prop up the pastor’s holiness and greater connection with our LORD by his Holy Spirit anointed ministry.
And yet, I have witnessed these same men of religious importance literally destroy marriages, relationships amongst parents with their children (including adult children), relationships amongst the laity including building up/favoring certain individuals over others in doing the same “works,” as if a compliment/recognition from the pastor far outweighs our identity in Christ alone, and eventually if a person allows it….they can destroy your faith in Jesus as the One and only Way for salvation, for most pastors, I believe, truly think that they are your ‘mediator’ between our Father Who art in Heaven, instead of Christ.
At the end of the day, I would trust a homeless man who believes in Jesus, MORE than, a pastor/reverend/priest/pope who power postures people with his manipulative ways.

I was reading all the articles since this is getting more attention again. I’m wondering, was another suit ever filed in Virginia. I haven’t heard any new information for a while on what is on with the court cases. I’m wondering where everything stands now.

I remember there was talk about filing another lawsuit in VA, but I’m not sure why it never happened. I don’t recall anyone releasing information on that. Unless someone else comes forward within the Statute of Limitations, I’m not sure any more can be done. It’s so sad that these victims cannot see justice.
