Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

purple ribbons

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the color for this cause is purple. I’ve been busy making purple ribbons and would love to offer one to you! If you would like a ribbon, please send your address to the SSB email (SpiritualSB@gmail.com) and I will send one off. If you have a preference for a lighter or darker purple, let me know. I have plenty of yarn!

The best thing you could do, though, is make yourself aware of resources in your area so you can help someone who is looking to leave an abusive relationship. A good place to start is the National Domestic Violence Hotline. You can also do a simple Google search with “domestic violence” and the name of your city or county which should bring up resources in your local area. Finally, you can follow the National Network to End Domestic Violence (#31n31) throughout the month to read survivor stories.

Now, if we could get NFL players to wear purple socks for part of the month….

  1. Thanks for the article Kathi and the knitting! What a kind offer you have made to everyone!

Also for people looking for a Christian resource about domestic violence – one that actually *gets it* there is A Cry for Justice blog by pastor Jeff Crippen in Oregon and Barbara Roberts in Australia.

There is information at the top of the web page for new users.

  2. Velour,
I still have 499 of Barbara Roberts book, “Not Under Bondage” to give away to DV programs and shelters. I’d really like to have this project complete. If you know of any, please let me know. Internet information is not accurate. It doesn’t matter if they are ministries, small churches with a limited budget or secular services.

  3. Thank you Cathy. I have a lot of yarn, so if you don’t mind I will copy your idea and pass them out in my area.

  4. Hi Brenda R,

Yes, I know of quite a few DV programs and shelters. Also, in your area if you contact the District Attorney’s Office and Victim Witness/Services they will also have contacts to the communities. (Also: colleges, social services, public libraries (where you could ask to donate the book for the permanent collection, the YWCA are just some that come to mind).

  5. Not a problem, Brenda. I didn’t know you were a knitter. I used a worsted weight yarn on probably a size 4 or 5 needle. Cast on 5 stitches. Slipped the first stitch on both sides and did a stockinette stitch for 6 inches.

  6. Brenda R,

Also contact therapists, including Christian therapists, therapists that deal with domestic violence or trauma recovery. Most therapists also keep a lending library and they loan books to clients.

  7. Kathi, this is wonderful. I didn’t know when I got sued a few years ago that I would soon meet many wives who have been harmed by domestic violence. I’ve heard of many cases where wives were coerced by their pastors to remain with their abusive husbands in order to reconcile the marriage. This is so wrong.

Thank you for offering to knit ribbons. I’ll take a light one – the one on the right. You know my address 🙂
