Street Preacher Tony Miano Yells to Woman, “You’re Acting Like a Man. STOP IT!!!”

Street Preacher, Tony Miano, member of John MacArthur’s church, Grace Community Church thinks this is how to stop abortions and win people to Christ.

Tony Miano, Street Preacher, misogyny, grace community church, john macarthur

Tony Miano yells at two women outside an abortion clinic. They are not happy and use colorful language in response. How should a Christian respond?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  Galations 5:22-23

Around the :55 mark in the video, Tony yells to one woman:

“Why do you set aside your femininity to act like a man? You’re acting like a man, STOP IT. YOU’RE ACTING LIKE A MAN STOP IT! STOP IT!!  Man, you just have a trashy mouth, don’t you?”

(Language warning)

Romans 2:4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

  1. Is Tony Miano ever going to get a *real job*? Or is his *career* in being abrasive and insufferable, flying to other countries like Scotland, offending people, violating laws, and getting arrested. No wonder The Gospel is so unappealing to unbelievers and brings a reproach upon Christ when it comes delivered *Miano* style.

**Full Disclosure: I haven’t watched the video yet as I just ate a really nice lunch want to keep my mood.

  2. Perhaps his Bible translation does not read, “Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and plead with anyone you find to come, so that My house will be full” (Luke 14:23), but rather, “Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and piss people off, so that My house will have plenty of room.” (Luke 14:23 TMV)

  3. O manomanoman,

Tony imo is a lunatic! Like his yelling is going to soften anyone’s heart. He imo is driving women right into the abortion procedure with his big freakin mouth. Does he not know “that a soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger. That is exactly what he did here, he provoked her, and probably pushed her further from Christ, or does he not understand, that it is God’s kindness that that leads to repentance. Here is another one for him. “The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness”. I am not a bible thumper anymore, kinda surprised that these verses popped into my head, but this made my blood boil and I wanted to thump him with some of his own medicine. I will shut up now.

  5. Having watched the video, in what sense was she “acting like a man”? Is he referring to her sailor-like cussing? If that’s “acting like a man,” and MachoMiano does not cuss like a sailor, then MachoMiano does not “act like a man.” Interesting . . .

  6. @William,

Miano, as you have gathered, has some very strange beliefs. He believes that a woman isn’t even allowed to read her Bible in front of a man as it usurps his authority and is *teaching* him. Ohhhhh, puuuuuhhhhhlllllleeeeee, Tony.

  7. Miano said (to women):

“Why do you set aside your femininity to act like a man? You’re acting like a man, STOP IT. YOU’RE ACTING LIKE A MAN STOP IT! STOP IT!! Man, you just have a trashy mouth, don’t you?”

I sent you a tweet addressing another aspect of this earlier today.

I realize Miano may well be turning off pro-choice women from considering the pro-life position, but I noted to you (Julie Anne) on Twitter how Miano is presuming what is and is not ladylike behavior, or what is “womanhood.” That is what I picked up.

Miano assumes that being confrontational, bold, (possibly cussing?), and opinionated are qualities that only man can or should possess, and that if a woman displays any of these traits, that she is not being a woman and is “trying to be a man.”

The Bible recounts tales of women who were bold, mouthy, and who were not demure and docile.

As I said on Twitter, Miano is assuming his cultural ideals of women are the same as what God says in the Bible. Having boundaries and being assertive are not “masculine” traits, nor does the Bible teach that only men should be assertive and practice boundaries.

Christians such as Miano who constantly teach girls and women that having boundaries and being assertive are “un-feminine” and un-biblical traits for them to have, opens them up to attracting abusive or controlling people, and to being abused or taken advantage of.

Miano IS abusive which is why he doesn’t want women to have boundaries. Do you think that his wife and daughters are permitted to have boundaries? Look at the upbraiding that Miano gives Christian women, everything from women not being permitted to read their Bibles in front of men (usurping male authority) to his upbraiding a Christian woman/wife for evangelizing people on a beach and drawing a crowd (and she did it nicely).

When Drony first Tweeted a link to this video, I tweeted back — without even watching it — “and the worst part is how she asserts herself like a man.” I was referring to how he terminated his Twitter discussion with JA that time. Again, hadn’t even seen the video. Sure enough, one of his minions favorite my Tweet.

  11. The other mistake that Miano makes is that just because someone is at Planned Parenthood doesn’t mean they are there for an abortion. I know plenty of men and women who get medical care and flu shots at PP clinics.

If Miano really wanted to make an impression, instead of yelling and insulting women whom he thinks are going to have abortions, he could have NICELY yelled, “Hey, we have great news for those who are pregnant. We have a pregnancy clinic staffed with people to help women, get them medical care for free, baby clothes, baby furniture, housing help, counseling, everything she needs when she feels like she has no other choice. We REALLY want to help you. We want you to meet other moms we’ve helped.” How is screaming abuse and condemnation *helpful* or *The Gospel*. I get seriously steamed with these people who scream at these women but won’t lift a finger to knit a baby blanket, paint some baby furniture, or donate diapers to the local crisis pregnancy center.

P.S. I know amazing young men and women who speak at the local, yearly crisis pregnancy center dinners/fundraisers whose moms were in just this situation and did not have abortions because they were honestly helped.

  13. Cindy K, are you talking Baltimore, MD ?

I once read a blog where a woman was rebuked for being manly. When she confront leadership for exact examples of her “manliness” they could only come up with (drum roll) she rode a horse to church. Obviously she was in a more rural area, but these deep theological church men had an issue with her horse.

She should have said, ” well his name is Mr. Ed if that helps and he is smart enough to be an elder in this church”.

  16. Brain, God didn’t create people just to send them to hell. His word says that he wants no one to perish 2 Peter 3:9, he just gave us free will to chose or reject him. Now there are a few “Christians” I have met that seem excited at the prospect of other people that don’t follow their specific doctrine going to hell. They even run around telling people they are going to hell with extraordinarily smug looks on their faces. Sometimes I wonder if the “going to hell crowd ” they are yelling at might be closer to developing a true relationship with God , than the folks with the smug looks on their faces.

  19. Scott,

In the big days of the Charismatic Renewal, it was like a big, multidenominational party. We had elders come from there, and a sister church in our network lists themselves as a sister church with SGM. (I don’t know how the other churches left them get away with that. That church was in Arnold, then pastored by a guy named Peeler — and the were very involved with youth programs at SGM. My crowd of pastors/elders has moved on or retired.

We were like Charles Simpson’s poor country cousins — originally planted by a guy named Bob Wright and another fellow named Chicarone or something. I can’t even remember all the names anymore. It was a New Covenant church that once had some 30 churches, but they were down to about half a dozen when I went there. More through the Baltimore Annapolis corridor. We had one or two churches on Eastern Shore, too.

Maybe they were scared of your “girl cooties”. Some boys are just like that. 🙂

Seriously, though, I sometimes think that the “Woman, submit!” crowd truly has a deep-seated fear of women. In his video, Miano bawled out (more than once), “It is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks!” I wonder how many of his words and deeds are born of fear in his heart.

“THIS WOMAN IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!”

And you are her friend, Miano? Even assuming that she is considering an abortion, what do you intend to do for her? Shove your Bible down her throat until she submits to you? I’ve never seen you do anything else for anyone.

    I get steamed too.
I’m very pro-life and very anti-abortion, but I’m also very common sense and prevention oriented for those who don’t want to become pregnant. I’ve heard this crowd rant and rail about prevention almost as much as they do about abortion itself:

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

If non-Christians think he’s an example of Christianity, why would anyone want to become a Christian?

For some reason, I doubt it because what he’s imposing on people is not the Gospel (which is love because God is love.)

Has he ever dissuaded a woman from aborting? Somehow, I doubt it because he’s a pig and pregnant woman who feel their only option is abortion need offers of help and a support network for them to walk down a terrifying path not some mean man hurling insults at them.

They are like I have a penis so I get to be a leader AND YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME”.

It was really funny at the time, but the more I think about it she said something pretty profound and true there. Our Julie Anne, mother to a large and tall brood of children, homeschooling mom for decades, is being accused of being pro-abortion?

Obviously JD Hall & Company have NEVER studied Ephesians and why we are all so critical of Tony Miano’s abusive speech:

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Ephesians 4:29,
    King James Version

I’d like to know why JD Hall & Company are criticizing Julie Anne, instead of telling Tony Miano to “man up” and get a real job instead of screaming at people and then asking for handouts all of the time to pay for his and his wife’s bills (and letting her work to support them but not doing it himself).

You know I was just thinking this morning, what if the protestors outside of Planned Parenthood had signs that said, “We are here to serve you and help you if you’re pregnant and need help.” What if they had brochures. Small bouquets of flowers to give women. Water. Juice. Cookies. What if they spoke gently and kindly to these women, for those who may be seeking abortions, and just poured on the love, sweetness, kindness and NO CONDEMNATION. What if they had real help lined up, like well-run charities do after disasters. What if they had it all right there.
(Tony Miano should recuse himself as he is too angry and abusive to everyone and has nothing to offer.)

Screaming at women is not the way that any of the truly effective loving pro-life people that I know minister to pregnant women who feel that their backs are against the wall. It hurts the cause when people like Miano take this hostile, abusive stance with these women.

  46. Velour at 11:38…..wow……I was moved to tears reading your comment. Yes! Yes! Yes! You vividly depict the true church of Jesus Christ in action; it is called “being the church” instead of self righteously acting like god’s police force as these men are doing via the video. I have yet to read in the Scriptures, Jesus yelling at women to put them in their place for He did not need to stoop to such low humanistic measures.

“Acting like a man”…..now that’s a good one. I wonder if Tony visited agriculture in action and saw what the women are doing here, if he would yell at me and my kin in sinful anger, to “stop acting like a man.”

It seems as though when I read my Bible, and there is work to be done for and in Christ, gender is not the issue, for both men and women are called to increase the Kingdom of God which is in Heaven.

Godly work knows no gender. Oh how liberating is truly is to be free in Jesus, rather than the likes of false preachers. And oh, how I wish I could give my testimony to Tony Miano for he needs to hear the true Gospel from a broken woman no less.

  47. Hi Katy,

Thank you for your nice post. It was just on my heart yesterday how we should talk, to other believers and unbelievers, including Christians who gather outside of Planned Parenthood. OK, believers, kick it in gear and LOVE those women in a radical way the way Jesus loved people.

I am white but lived in a city with a large black population. It was older black Christian women who evangelized me. I was hard as a rock! They were kind in their words, behavior, generous, and gentle. They melted me. The combination of all of that LOVE plus fried chicken and sweet potato pie and sweet gifts of bubble bath, perfumed lotion, and sweaters…just did me in. That is the way to evangelize people. Jesus didn’t yell at people.

You are correct about the whole *man* thing that Miano does to women, accusing them of that. It’s bizarre. In your life. In mine. Around the world. What does his beliefs have to do with The Gospel? I grew up in a farming/ranching family. Women worked hard right alongside the men.

The Gospel is the good news that God, the Creator of all living things loves us so much he sent His only begotten Son into the world to die in the place of sinful men. His resurrection is our hope. Unbelievers are not reconciled to God by promising to try better. No! They are reconciled through understanding that Jesus paid it all.
