A Note to Doug Wilson and Friends and Foes of Doug Wilson

I have two things to share, first the following invitation. Some may have seen this on Twitter or Facebook, but I want to make it more public here so more eyes can see and have an opportunity to meet:

Okay, now the second issue. For the last two weeks I have shared publicly (tagging Doug Wilson several times on Twitter) that I would like to meet with Doug Wilson. He never took me up on the offer or even acknowledged it, for that matter, even though he was very actively posting on Twitter, blogs, etc.

When I could see that Doug was clearly not interested (and then later found out he had a speaking engagement elsewhere), I still wanted to make the trip to meet with others to have an opportunity to have a time to share, encourage, support those who have been harmed by Wilson.

I have been blessed beyond measure by such supportive and caring people, and have received quite a few private notes from people sharing their deep concern about me going to Moscow.  Many have said that I should NOT do this trip alone, I should let law enforcement in my area, be very alert, etc.

As I’ve had conversations with people about this, I find myself getting angry. I’m not angry about people contacting me. Not at all!  I’m angry that so many in the city of Moscow have such a fear of one man and his cronies.

Can you imagine your home and your community which is supposed to be a place of safety, security, refuge, for some, is a place of fear, terror, and uneasiness.  I am angry about this.

There is NOTHING godly about a man who uses his assumed position of authority and far-reaching influence in the community (including civil authorities) which causes people to live in fear if he perceives anyone is saying or doing anything against him. This is how spiritual bullies behave, not godly pastors. Enough, already!

    I’m sure you could look Wilson in the eye. Take your 6’8″ son with you if he’s available. I would gladly pay to see Wilson look up to him. I’ll sell tickets to the event. (All proceeds donated to a local Moscow, ID, children’s advocacy center, of course.)

    All kidding aside, I know this fear. Many ex-members of my former cult have the same fear. You’re right. It’s a huge red flag that you’re dealing with a bully.

  11. Yes, it is very sad that you have people warning you to watch your back while you’re in Moscow. No wonder no one steps up and says anything against Wilson and his group. At least they all know that we’re watching and keeping track. Safe travels!

A self-styled “pastor” with no formal ordination, a self-styled “education expert” with no terminal degree, a mostly self-published author whose best-known book was plagiarized from a racist tract. What amazes me is not that such an obvious charlatan exists but that he’s taken seriously by anyone (which reflects horribly on TGC, I might add). How is he someone worth paying any serious attention to, let alone being afraid of? What’s he going to do, write another boorish sanctimonious blog post at you?

  18. Have you contacted the FBI? I’m sure that a guy who sides with child molesters, like Doug Wilson, is on their radar. (You don’t need to answer this publicly…in fact, I don’t think it’s good to.)

    Many-many years ago after a D&D session, my DM observed that “Most cults are founded so the cult leader can (1) get rich, (2) get laid, or (3) both.”

    Looks like (2) can be extended to the cult leader’s kinks/paraphiliae in general.

  33. God speed to you, Julie Anne! If only one person is helped out of the Moscow cult, your visit was well worth it. I recall a time when I went back to my former Christian cult – at their compound where the leader was having a meeting for all the followers. I went to that meeting with the intention that if I could influence just one person to leave, my visit there was well worth it. It just so happened that is exactly what happened! One of the women there left a few days later. She told me it was because she saw in me a freedom and joy in Christ that she didn’t have. I saw this same woman a few weekends ago at our ex-member reunion and we talked about the very same thing – my visit to the cult meeting and her subsequent leaving. I pray that you, too, will be influential in the same way during your visit to Moscow, Idaho.

    I was reading Cindy Kunsman’s Under Much Grace website last night. She said, and learned this from the experts, therapists, etc. who counsel those who have been through bad church experiences, that it takes a minimum of 2-years for most folks to be on the road to healing.

    I hear ‘ya. Very destructive person leading that *church*, along with elders lacking in any kind of sound thinking, and a church membership who tolerates it for so much as a second. Those people should stop giving their $ and vote with their feet.

    And parents…don’t send your children to this college! You could end up with a pedophile as a son-in-law and your daughter in a terrible situation, grandchild, and the whole family because that church’s pastors/elders have no brains!!

    Wilson is a powerful person here because of his influence in this small community. For those who disagree with him or get in his way, he can make your life difficult. I haven’t heard of any Wilson defenders acting like Vision Forum’s men dressed in black. That would have made my trip more exciting.

  50. Julie Anne, you came to my mind yesterday and I prayed for you – that you be able to help at least one Dougerite Kirk member see the truth and that they would be convinced to leave. I really wouldn’t be surprised if a number of Kirk members are thinking of leaving, but planning to do it covertly. I’m familiar with the pattern of leaving a controlling, religious environment having lived in one myself in days gone by. Many planned their leaving weeks in advance so that it could be pulled off smoothly and without incident. Others, however, just left on the spur of the moment leaving all of their belongings behind. Of course it was more difficult in that environment because we lived communally, in houses and apartment buildings, so our movements were observed by those with whom we lived. I’d imagine it’s a bit easier to leave the Kirk in that many members live in their own dwellings.

    Moscow is a relatively small town. Even if you leave a church, you will be bumping into people from the church wherever you go. In that respect, it is a very difficult place to leave. I’ll be explaining more in upcoming posts.

  53. Jordan Hall likes Doug Wilson. I read a tweet that said he considered Wilson a great modern day theologian. Idaho is close in proximity (relative to West Coast-size states) to Montana where JD’s church is located. New Saint Andrews, the college Wilson started would likely appeal to JD Hall’s folks, so he’s not going to speak against Wilson.

    Our former cult was also a community. Many people not only live on church property or property owned by someone in the church, but they also work for a church business or are employed by someone in the church. When they leave or are kicked out they lose their job as well as their home. It’s just one of the ways the cult keeps people on a very short leash.

    We were fortunate enough to have paid for the property we live on, though our names are not on the title. We faced very thinly veiled threats to kick us off our property after we parted ways with the cult. My husband slowed them down by telling his father he has copies of cancelled checks made out to the lending bank for payment on the property. Even then, his father still makes occasional comments about us moving off the property.

    I can relate. I run into members of my former cult all the time at the grocery stores. A few will smile and wave. Most of them just ignore me. A couple have run and ducked down another aisle to avoid me. #Awkward

    They have local judges that attend their music programs. They still enjoy a lot of local support. However, I think they’ve finally screwed up enough with a former POTUS that he no longer comes around.
