Luke 15: 1-10

Now the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering around to hear him. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says: ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you from the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.

  2. Thank you, Kathi. Welcome back. I love the stained glass picture from your trip. It’s gorgeous!

    “And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home.” This part touched me. Christ doesn’t badger and bully people. He goes after the lost sheep in a loving fashion to bring him home. It’s His kindness that brings people to repentance.

  3. When we were in Ireland we had the chance to watch a herd of sheep being moved down the middle of a road. It was fascinating to watch the shepherd (if they’re still called that today – he was riding a 4-wheeler) maneuver them down the road and the sheep dog running back and forth getting the ones who wanted to stray off to stay in the herd. That dog was panting hard when all was said and done.

    As we were slowly following them, there was a sheep on the opposite side of the road in another pasture bleating after them and longingly looking to join them. It couldn’t, though, because of the fence – and it was a part of another herd, but it really wanted to join in. My daughter talked about feeling sorry for that poor sheep, but all I could think was that shepherd knew how many needed to be moved and he probably would have stopped to get that one if it needed to go. This parable was in my mind while watching watching that whole scene.
