On Thursday, Pastor David McGee of The Bridge Fellowship in Kernersville, North Carolina, posted a comment on his Facebook account publicly naming and “disfollowshipping” four church members. I repeat – this was done PUBLICLY on Facebook, not in the context of a church meeting among church members.

David continued with his comment by quoting about 30 – thirty, not 3, verses justifying his actions. Some of the verses were quoted in different translations and guess which verse was included? Of course Hebrews 13:17 (“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account.”), but take a look at the last verse quoted. Why do you supposed he ended with this verse?
Heb 13:7
Remember your leaders who first taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and trust the Lord as they do.  NLT

I like to dig a little bit when I read words. Do you see the contradiction in the following two comments by Pastor McGee?  Take special note of the tithing references. The 2nd comment was posted 16 hours after the first comment.

There were other comments claiming this was not really about tithing, but if it wasn’t about tithing, then why is it mentioned at all?
Here you can see some pushback and then a member defends her pastor. I noticed the word “covenant” in this comment, but did not see a membership covenant at the church website.

When people publicly speak out against a pastor, they are frequently labeled as the enemy. The pastor is on the right side and anyone who questions him, is labeled as divisive, disobedient to God and His Word:

I found another contradiction.  Here McGee says he won’t defend himself publicly:

But wait . . .now he is going to the media to share:

This little note is revealing. And 31 people liked it!  Yea, it’s really important that your pastor has lots and lots of friends . . because that makes him right and reputable and all Christiany.

Of course we do not know all of the details of this case and can only make conclusions based on what we see publicly. But what I see publicly is troubling.
I have heard of stories where church members have been abusive to pastors. We often talk only about abusive leaders, but that is not always the case. Even if members are abusive, we need to ask how does a shepherd appropriately handle members who are divisive? If Pastor McGee is correct in saying that these folks have been divisive, how should a pastor respond?  Do you see godly fruit in the behavior?

  1. Thank you for posting this update. I just read some of his son’s comments and even more confirmation coming from his own son. It is heartbreaking-for his son, wife and all the people who follow his ministry. I noticed a few comments rebuking him for exposing his Dad. His son is doing what is biblical not the elders/leaders of the church who are protecting Pastor David. I hope he does repent and we can find closure to this nightmare.

  2. I got through commenting on a blog about Pastor David McGee’s good friend, Mike Kessler, and was confronted by one of Kessler’s radio station executives who wildly defended Mike Kessler for his divorce and marriage to a new wife 38 years younger than himself, who happened to be pregnant. I had been fooled by listening to this Kessler, and now read this about a minister who is always on Kessler’s show. “Birds of a feather, flock together!” Wow! If you listen to these two guys, you’d swear they were little angels.

  3. I am a Christian, I don’t like this kind of thing. I don’t know what all went on at this congregation but two things bother me, you don’t take this public (which he did) you take care of the problem if there is one privately, if the others take it public just take it! Jesus on the cross didn’t sit up there shaming others to look good HE JUST TOOK IT AND ASKED THE FATHER TO FORGIVE THEM… The other thing I see is when did congregation’s start making pacts? This sounds to me like secrecy and as a Christian the last thing I want to be is secret.. I want to share all things about being a Christian. I don’t understand some of the preacher’s today, it seems more to be about congregation size, money and power. I also see a problem in these types of preacher’s always schooling believers about tithing, they live in fancy homes and drive fancy vehicles, expensive clothes and jewelry +++, the apostles had none of this yet with humility did far more works. I live off of $750 a month I give all I can but still feel guilty by my own thoughts I should do more, I don’t need a millionaire preacher or a hundredthousandaire (I know there’s no such word) to try to make me feel worse so THEY can have more. A true preacher ( as I see it ) should never be rich, doesn’t have to be poor but surely not rich while many in their own congregation are struggling or worse. I feel bad for them because our FATHER in Heaven and our LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST see all. GOD BLESS

  4. To do such a commentary is just as wrong as making such announcement in a secular public forum as face book.

All from what I could read would be speculations but should not be done through fb or the like

  5. Looks like the McGee empire is falling. The entire church, led by elders, left the Bridge because they agreed McGee is not fit to lead. We could use an updated article!

  6. Thanks for the comment. I’ve been getting other reports of McGee absolutely losing it. I’ve seen several of his online Facebook videos and he does not look well at all. In fact, it looks like he’s under the influence of something and reacting strongly. I can’t believe the whole church doesn’t walk out.

  7. I was in The Bridge’s youth group growing up. Much of what has happened with this church has caused my own trust in churches in general to be damaged.

I’m trying to find answers about what happened to finally make the church leadership leave.
