Does John MacArthur’s Master’s College know about Tony Miano’s style of evangelism?  Is this who they want to model proper street evangelism?  Really?  Look at this video that Tony Miano posted on his own Facebook wall.  (strong language warning).

Do you see what I see?  So because of God being Sovereign over the salvation of people, Miano feels entitled to treat people any way he wants to treat them.   And then we go on to this humble brag tweet:

  2. In regards to the cow tipping Miano tweet about shoving- I wonder if Miano’s elders (that he says he loves to be under authority and accountable to) would have a problem with that tweet?

    Does John MacArthur / GCC (Miano’s church) believe in shoving Jesus down people’s throats? I don’t think so. I do not agree with a lot of things about MacArthur, but I listened to a good sermon by him years ago about sowing gospel seeds. He spoke of a farmer sowing seed and then going to bed. The farmer doesn’t stay up all night shoving or forcing the seed to take root. He leaves it and expects the seed to do its thing. IOW– the Holy Spirit does the work.

    I hope someone at GCC is reading this man’s tweets, especially since Miano posted in his latest newsletter that he is going to teach three classes at TMC Evangelism Society (not sure what that is other than something at The Masters College) on “A Lack of Love,” “God’s Sovereignty in Evangelism,” and “Sacred Cows.”

  4. Badgering people never gave them a heart change. They have to want Jesus. They only get that through love. Plant the seed and let the Holy Spirit do His work. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force him to drink. You can only encourage and pray.

  5. No, Tony. It means there is something distasteful about your methodology. It means you have already decided your way is the correct way and leaves no room for the prompting of the HS. It means you have decided people are not individuals so their personhood is not to be respected. It means you want numbers, not a relationship. It means you want to take a shortcut to serving Christ. While you do all of your “shoving”, people choke, suffocate and gag on yet another bully telling them what to do.
    How does a believer reach out without knowing the other person’s needs, sorrows, questions, suffering and pain? Yes, Jesus is the answer, but please first listen to the questions of others, empathize and love them. Jesus doesn’t need Milano shoving him anywhere. If I was Jesus (but I am just a fallible human) I would probably sucker punch Milano before he could shove me anywhere!

  7. Is he for or against “A Lack of Love”? I suspect “love” in “A Lack of Love” will not be about love as we know it. Some people’s “love” looks a lot like something else.

    The Bible says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

  8. I hope more people see where this is really going. Forget evangelism…that is just the bait/excuse. This is about being able to treat people in horrible ways with a “In the Name of Jesus” sin pass.

    These are people who are dangerous when they have power. They define “love” as being “hateful”. They look for fights and even invite them using obnoxious and provacative behaviors.

    When you strip away all the limits we have in place in a free country, and from strictly a “foundational principle” point of view, what is different between them and Islam?

    Nevermind the cognitive dissoance. If God is Sovereign (using their definition of controlling every molecule 24/7) then why would anyone have to shove Jesus down anyone’s throat?

  14. You’re right, Miano could learn that. But there are peoplke who are ever hearing but never understanding. Whether Miano fits that category or not is God’s business, but frankly, were I in his presence I’d be compelled to try to witness to HIM, not the ones he’s badgering.

    By the way, that’s the first Piper tweet I’ve read that I actually like. I get that one. Love is inefficient in a sense, we ought to be willing to wait a lifetime for people, not just fit them within our schedules and push them around for our convenience.

    Rev. 3:20 gives a different picture. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

    Probable translation of Piper’s tweet: Love doesn’t get the job done quickly. It takes its time to understand people and learn why they object to the Gospel.

    To me, that’s a good facet of love. Problem is: you can’t quite understand if Piper thinks this a good thing or not.

  21. I admit to becoming a Christian as a result of fear tactics. I’m not resentful of this, but there is definitely a better way to approach evangelism through more loving means.

    He likes to borrow phrases from Paul Washer, but I never see him giving Washer the credit. I USED to listen to Washer’s sermons many years ago and I heard him use that kick the door down phrase a lot. Miano also likes to copy Washer’s -twist not scripture lest ye be like satan- phrase.

    While the above was a bad tweet, the following one surprised me in that there was no indication he was joking. And, if not joking, then it is one of the most absurd, egotistical things I have read. (I wonder how many of his GCC inner circle (as he likes to call them) and elders were watching college football last Saturday-oops?)

  25. Gag is right, Brian. Mr. Miano is gagging on his sense of self-importance, as if the man’s salvation rests on Mr. Miano’s efforts. What a works-based doctrine of evangelism he has.

  26. You know Tim I just found that tweet so self serving. No one saves another only Jesus saves sinners. I agree with evangelism, even street evangelism. I knew this old guy who use to go out, he was a member of the Gideons. This man and his friends were like glow in the dark kind of people. They would stand out at colleges in the area and hand out those little green / orange NT bibles. They would sit and talk with people and they would listen, way more than talk. They would spend hours with one person if needed and never did they push. They would never raise their voice etc.

    Most of them were vets from WW2 Korea, Viet Nam, this was back in the 80’s. No bluster what so ever, a great deal of humility. Many of them were also extremely successful business people I mean very successful. I still remember those men they made an impression of real evangelism.

    IMO, one should not tweet if you cannot successfully get your point across and Piper cannot make that happen. Many topics just can’t be given justice in a few letters. But IMO Piper can write a book and say nothing.

  29. Wow! What a story from this Navy Seal gentleman. Thank-You Brian for posting this amazing account.

    In my relationship with Jesus Christ, I have discovered that those who deem themselves as unworthy of salvation, turning to Christ alone for their faith, witness to me far more than those who sound their own trumpets….repeatedly. Pride and arrogance witness to the masses, humility and meekness witness to the few.

    I have seen far more humility exhibited amongst the believers in our LORD who are unchurched, than those who are institutionally churched, how can this be?

    Lord, I thank-you for your graciousness and mercy in showing me this video; that I am desperately in need of godly thankfulness that cuts to the heart and renews the mind in you and your Holy Word, for we have made a mockery of the true Gospel and have gone a whoring after the things and the applause of this world. And yes, LORD, I hear this phrase coming out the mouths of the churched…..”I am so proud….” Lord, we boast, brag, and highlight ourselves even when we say that we are selfless……..who then speaks truth in humility among us? If the truth be told, we are all liars and full of self in the sight of Your Holy Presence and so in need of more of You, dear Jesus. Show us your way through Your Word, by the power of the Holy Spirit, who always bears witness to you precious Jesus…..I am broken. In Your Holy Name I pray, amen.

  32. Grow up this person is a real hero and could teach you a few things about what it is to suffer and struggle.

    I’m currently checking and proofing a non-fiction manuscript by one of my writing partners. Unlike his usual fiction (sword & sorcery), this is a non-fiction collection of “local color” Americana handed down as family oral tradition.

    Including almost starving during the Great Depression.
    And his father stepping in molten metal saving a coworker at Bethlehem Steel (survived with badly burned feet; no sensation in the soles for the rest of his life).
    And his father’s three brothers:
    1) Uncle George, who was at Omaha Beach where he “saw more men die in one day than he had ever seen alive at one time”.
    2) Uncle Bill, who almost lost a leg at Anzio (Bronze Star & Purple Heart) and refused painkillers because he wanted to make sure the docs didn’t amputate.
    3) Uncle Henry, who was at Suicide Cliff on Saipan (which he did speak of, somewhat) and Okinawa (which he refused to speak of).

    Actually, the parts about his uncles in the Depression and the War was the grimmest part. Most of the ms are stories of blue-collar craziness at the Steel, “can-you-believe-that” colorful incidents with the family in the then-rural Lehigh Valley, and Pennsylvania Dutch spook stories passed down through the family. Reading the ms, I really should have “Allentown” by Billy Joel playing in the background, as most of the stories are set around Allentown.

  40. You know when I first became a “Christian” I took part in this book table where I was expected, prodded and pumped to act like the tools we are discussing. I often felt contempt for myself blasting people but if I did not I was a coward and Jesus would send me to hell with great passion. Well a few times I made a real blank of myself, I am still ashamed of that but I was young and I wanted to really serve Jesus, until I was reminded that I never knew Jesus and rejected Him and suppressed His truth in unrighteousness and was a vessel in Satan’s service deceiving souls into hell. Of course that is psychotic but I actually believed it to my shame.

    I remember the lady I worked with at the developmental center, she use to do some really awful stuff to herself, like pull her hair out down to the bone, I mean that her skull was exposed and we would try all sorts of stuff. I tried prayer, it made no difference whatsoever, and casting out the devils which was even less useless. She had taken out one eyeball, I mean her eye with a utensil in her past. Let me translate, she stabbed herself in the eye with a utensil and basically blinded herself in one eye.

    I remember one time, I still look at my left hand and see the scars, dont know how accurate it is but I got to marks on my left hand and a memory, she went after her one remaining eye and I put my left had in the way, the fork went down to the bone. She was serious. It was not the first time I did that, nor would it be the last, not to long ago I put my hand between a van door jam and a students head when he wanted to bang himself into unconsciousness and got a dislocated middle finger. It was worth it, I have had my fingers dislocated well, many times with being pulled, catching some student falling, getting pushed down a flight of stairs, on many occasions etc. Let me make this clear, I am a piece of crap as a human being and God sending me to hell would be doing be a favor, I get that, in spades. God hates me, He really does and I fully expect to go to hell. At this point personally I could care less on that, but it is the folks I work with. I struggle with that.

    You know from the very cheap seats, it really is not very good news, it never has been.

  41. There’s nothing distasteful about double German chocolate cheesecake, but to have it shoved down my throat takes the focus away from the taste. Food is supposed to be looked at, smelled, tasted, chewed, savored, then swallowed in appropriate sized portions.

    Shoving Jesus down people’s throats just may end up resulting in a religious tracheotomy. Method matters as much as content.
