Just like that: T4G Statement of Support for Mahaney is Removed!!

*     *     *

UPDATE  AT BOTTOM OF POST!!****

This morning, I started to add a new comment to the Together for the Gospel statement released on Facebook yesterday and noticed the comment number decreasing.  When I refreshed the screen, the whole thing was GONE!  Zilch, Nada!

I’d love to be a bug on the wall and see the exchange of e-mails and phone calls this morning after that happened.  Maybe something like this:

CJ Defender #1:  Hey bro, T4G removed their statement, whatcha going to do now?  Are you going to say something publicly?  Should we remove our blog articles in support of the statement?  I mean, if we keep ours up, that’s confusing, ya know, man? I just don’t know the right thing to do.  What does it look like to have our blog articles posted in support of the statement if the T4G statement is gone, ya know?

CJ Defender #2:  I know, right?  I don’t know, brother, I need to pray about this.

But seriously – what is Denny Burk going to do about this (screen shot taken from his blog in support of the T4G statement)?  Read his last statement.

So, first I saw removal of comments = silencing dissenters

Then the whole statement was removed = damage control

Those of you who have read here long enough surely recognize those as signs that high-controlling pastors use which sometimes cross into abuse.  We as a collective church are asking those collective leaders for accountability and they are saying a collective “NO” to us.  That is bold and brazen to do on a public stage.  That’s fine with me, because there are many, including me, who will continue to expose this.

I think this is the wheat separating from the chaff right before our eyes.  God is cleaning His church. We must not be silent.  We must keep pressing in.  It’s time to turn over the tables in the complacent Church of Abuse that has continued for far too long.

I’m sure this post will be updated with related blog posts, screen shots, who knows.   So be sure to check back to see what is new.

Here is the original statement:

Together for the Gospel

STATEMENT FROM MARK DEVER, LIGON DUNCAN, and ALBERT MOHLERMay 23, 2013We are friends who have been brought together for the gospel. Over the last several months, we have wanted to speak publicly to the issues that have related to our friend C. J. Mahaney. A Maryland judge’s recent action to dismiss a lawsuit against Sovereign Grace Ministries offers us the first opportunity, and responsibility, to speak to this issue. We could not speak to the issues involved so long as they were raised only in the context of an action in the civil courts. We have never made a public comment with regard to claims and counter-claims in a civil lawsuit, and we will not violate that principle now.Claims presented in a civil lawsuit seeking financial compensation are beyond the ability of the public to render judgment. Often, such claims are even beyond the ability of a court to deliberate. To comment on such claims is irresponsible, since no one apart from the court and the parties directly involved has any ability to evaluate the claims presented. If the filing of civil litigation against a Christian ministry or leader is in itself reason for separation and a rush to judgment, no ministry or minister is safe from destruction at any time. Furthermore, the effort to try such a case in the court of public opinion prior to any decision rendered by an authorized court is likewise irresponsible. We have stood beside our friend, C. J. Mahaney, and we can speak to his personal integrity. We can make no judgment as to the truthfulness of the horrifying charges of sexual abuse made against some individuals who have been connected, in some way, to Sovereign Grace Ministries and its churches. Our hearts must go out to anyone, and especially to any child, who suffers abuse at the hand of anyone. In such a case the legal authorities must use the full power of the law to investigate and to prosecute any perpetrator of such crimes. We must take any responsible action to protect the vulnerable, and we must act immediately to inform legal authorities of any charge or claim of sexual abuse, and do so without delay. Our first response must be to call the police, to act to protect the child or young person, and then to proceed to biblical church discipline when the facts demand such a response. If a Christian leader is accused of any wrongdoing, those to whom he is accountable must investigate the charges and then deal responsibly with the evidence. If a criminal accusation is made, Christians have a fundamental duty to inform law enforcement officials. This does not, however, preclude or mitigate the church’s responsibility for biblical church discipline.A Christian leader, charged with any credible, serious, and direct wrongdoing, would usually be well advised to step down from public ministry. No such accusation of direct wrongdoing was ever made against C. J. Mahaney. Instead, he was charged with founding a ministry and for teaching doctrines and principles that are held to be true by vast millions of American evangelicals. For this reason, we, along with many others, refused to step away from C. J. in any way. We do not regret that decision. We are profoundly thankful for C. J. as friend, and we are equally thankful for the vast influence for good he has been among so many Gospel-minded people. Our heart goes out to anyone who has ever suffered abuse of any kind. Our emphatic encouragement would be for anyone who has ever suffered such abuse or knows of anyone made vulnerable to such abuse to contact law enforcement officials without delay. We must then allow the law enforcement agencies and the courts to do their proper work. When criminal charges are filed, the public is then presented with evidence upon which it can draw a responsible judgment. On matters of protecting the vulnerable, Christians know what judgment must be made. We side with the victims. Our hope and prayer is that Christ’s healing and health will come to all parties involved in this matter and that justice and righteousness will prevail for all. May every true victim of any injustice be vindicated. May every doer of wrong be exposed. And may all of us speak no further than we can responsibly speak.

Those who minister in the name of the Lord Christ bear an inescapable duty to live and to minister in a way that is above reproach. Those who teach, reminds James, will face a stricter judgment. [James 3:1] May everything we do, everything we teach, and all that we are be measured against that standard.

Together for the Gospel,

Mark Dever, Ligon Duncan, Albert Mohler

****** Evidently, TG4 removed the statement from their Facebook page and then posted it on their main website.  I had been checking the TG4 site several times and it was not there before (when there were 50+ comments on the Facebook page).   When they moved it to their site, all of the Facebook comments were entirely scrubbed.  Also, please note, they do not allow comments there.  (No-Talk Rule)

  1. So, Born4Battle, you have lots of concern regarding the criticism of those who are silent and do not act, but no outrage at the thought of little girls and boys being raped? Why?

It was also given to that church by a founder/shepherd and not by folks over in Ephesus or other churches. that should say something in this situation we need to think about. .

  7. It may be a free country, but Calvinism certainly isn’t free. It’s bondage. It does not matter whether it is a local church or not. Where was Paul? He wasn’t local. And, Calvinism isn’t local either. It’s everywhere. Paul’s letters are set for examples for all church’s, not just the church in Cornith.

And B4B, no, your mourning is not your business…it’s all of your Christian brother and sisters business. We are to all mourn with those who are mourning.

The bible does not forbid judging others, as you point out.

If we judge others, then we prepare ourselves to be judged, as well. Righteous judgment is not a sin.

There is nothing wrong with judging the character of another person.

Those who lead are supposed to have good report, even with those who are outside of the church (non-Christians). If they don’t have a good report, then they are not to lead. That is a judgment.

  8. B4B,
So, what I can deduce from your posting is that if we don’t go to the local church, then we are to stay out of it, and mind our own business, and to keep our comments to ourselves. Where is that biblical?

It don’t work like that. All Christians are of the same body, and if the toe hurts, we are to mend the toe. There are NOT many bodies of Christ…just one.

    “‘feeding frenzy’.”

Well, I would just like to say as kindly as I can that people can feel very judged by those kinds of phrases and statements. By saying feeding frenzy and acting like the enemy’s minions, it appears to me that those are indeed statements that “judge the quality of others’ feelings about anything”…as you wrote above in the quote …while claiming you do not do that.

“Feeding frenzy” implies people are enjoying/lusting after commenting (without proper tone because people are either blunt, impassioned or angry). And acting like the devil’s minions? I know I have commented very strongly about SGM using sarcasm, displaying disgust and asking probing questions. I’ve done it for 2 years. Am I one of the enemy’s minions? No I am not. I really do not understand.

  10. You are reading things into my comment again> I merely suggested something else for consideration and said it means ‘something’. And now you bring in Calvinism? I know there are those sorts of doctrinal also in the conversation, but I’m certainly not going there. I have a small library concerning Calvinism v. Arminianism, not to mention Luther v. Erasmus, Augustine v. Pelagious if you want to really go back, as well as Whitefield and Wesley during the Second Great Awakening. So that I could find out what Calvin was really about (I had a lot of hypercalvinistic notions and was VERY judgmental) I downloaded a rather large set of seminary level lectures on the history of Calvinism. Having said that, I also studied what the Bible states in plain language and do maintain a theological position, although I am not going there here because, after all, my only dog in this fight is how believers are to behave. Maybe I’m speaking to the wrong crowd. I’m post 60 now and perhaps failing to communicate with a much younger set of folks who think they have all the answers. I don’t know. ALL I can do is continue to apply scripture and pray for the best, for myself and everyone else.

  11. Yes, I am reading things into your comment. How can I not? You wrote it. You called the church in corinth a local church. That suggests that it was not for Ephesis. You called Paul the head hancho, in that he was the founder of that church. This all tells me that what Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and that it is no one elses business, and that we are to stay out of it. Is there another way to read into what you said? And…Yes, Calvinism is bondage. That isn’t hard to figure out.

  12. And Ed, there might be a good reason that the doctrines of sovereign grace are having a comeback. BTW, Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion is a great read, especially if you want to reado something that has contributed greatly to the founding and establishment of our own country.

Concerning leadership, a good report is certainly a requirement.. However, I am nowhere close to being in the biblical chain of discipline for demanding anyone step down from anything, and neither are you. We can have our opinions all day long, and right though they may be, we need to let other mechanisms follow their course and not interfere.

  16. RE 10:41 comment,
If I were to ‘feel’ personally judged when my name was not used, but a general statement was made, I would have a problem somewhere between a pity part and just plain sniveling.

I keep trying to say that the main concern I have in all this is Christians putting on a grand display of bad behavior in light of scripture. Sure I have real and deep concerns abut the issue of abuse (of any kind) in the church. To say/imply that I have no concern for victims because I don’t jump on the ‘let’s bash C.J., T4G, TGC, Tim Challies, and everyone else who doesn’t jump on C.J. bandwagon (and some have), is in fact peering into my heart and a bald-faced lie. It saddens me deeply that some cannot seem to be able to see past their emotions. that would include me because I’ve been blinded by my emotions more than a couple of times in my 60+ years.

Well…I will say your comment is confusing and does not address what I wrote.

I can say, with complete assurance, that I am not having “a pity part,” and “just plain sniveling” was the last heart motive I intended to display in my comment. Why, instead of responding to me with argumentation, am I belittled instead?

Your statements re: feeding frenzy and acting as minions of the enemy were general statements then, if I am understanding you correctly. To whom are general statements referring… if not to the general population?

As far as the last paragraph in your comment to me, I never mentioned any of that to you – so I do not know how that pertains to me. I did not say or imply that you had no concern for victims. I did not request that you jump on a bandwagon. Are you mixing me up with someone else?

All I wanted to relay was how your general phrases describing Christian commenters as feeding frenzies and acting as minions of the enemy (generally speaking) could be seen as judgmental and hurtful, something you claim you do not ever wish to do.

  20. General statments can be taken as peronally judgmental, but if they are, it’s because someone ‘feels’ personallly judged when they are not. I cannot control that. IF I feel judged when I am not being personally judged, it seems to me that the problem is mine, not the one making a general statement. Is that clearer?

No, it isn’t as easy as you make it out to be. You make a statement, and it deserves to be dissected. You don’t want people to judge, period. You don’t like feeding frenzies. You wish that people would just shut up and that it’s nobodies business except those involved. You have compassion for the good ole boys, and not much compassion for the “alleged” victims. You want to protect the institution of the church, but not the church body, who are hurt. The protection of the good ole boys is more important to you. That is righteous judging of YOU.

I’m pleased that you hold the written word in high esteem – You write on your blog…
“The written word is available to every Christian and it is not a hard thing to just examine everything in light of it’s truth.”

I’ve noticed, most of these “Spiritually Abusive” guys use the word “Biblical” – a lot.
To me “Biblical” means – it is in the Bible.

If something is NOT in the Bible, would you agree, we can call it…
    Non-Biblical – Extra-Biblical – Anti-Biblical?

We are also warned by Jesus about Commandments of Men, Doctrines of Men, And…
Traditions of Men, that Make Void the Word of God. Mk 7:13

    Mark 7:13
KJV – Making the word of God of “none effect” through your tradition…
ASV – Making “void” the word of God by your tradition…
NIV – Thus you “nullify” the word of God by your tradition…

So, after leaving “The Abusive Religious System” I notice these “Spiritually Abusive” guys…
Who love to controll and manipulate the folks…
Who love all their works they do for to be seen of men…
Who love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the congregation…
Who love greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Pastor, Pastor…

I notice these “Spiritually Abusive” guys have taken a lot of “Titles/Postions” NOT found in the Bible, to automatically seperate themselves from “WE” regular sheep and “Lord it over God’s heritage.”

Haven’t you ever wondered? Why? In the Bible?
NOT one, Disciple of Jesus, called themself – pastor/leader/reverend?
NOT one, Disciple of Jesus, called another Disciple – pastor/leader/reverend?
NOT one, Disciple of Jesus, had the “Title/Position” – pastor/leader/reverend?
NOT one, Disciple of Jesus, was Hired, or Fired, as a – pastor/leader/reverend?

Now I cudda missed it – And maybe you can help – Can you find for me, In the Biible…

    1 -Pastor/Leader/Reverend. 2 – Under Shepherd. 3 – Senior Pastor. 4 – Lead Pastor. 5 – Teaching Pastor. 6 – Executive Pastor. 6 – Youth Pastor. 7 – Singles Pastor. 8 – Worship Pastor. 9 – Reverend. 10 – Holy Reverend. 11 – Most Holy Right Reverend. 12 – ArchDeacon. 13 – Canon. 14 – Prelate. 15 – Rector. 16 – Cardinal. 17 – Pope. 18 – Doctor. 19 – M.Div. 20 – Paid Professional Pastors – in Pulpits – Preaching – to People – in Pews….

The only one I can find in the Bible with the “Title” Shepherd/leader/Reverend – Is Jesus. 😉

If these “Titles” are NOT in the Bible? – Can we call them?
    Non-Biblical – Extra-Biblical – Anti-Biblical?

    Jer 50:6
“My people” hath been “lost sheep:”
**their shepherds** have caused them to *go astray,*

    1 Pet 2:25
For ye were as *sheep going astray;*

Dan is being extremely “Judgemental” but will NOT respond honestly – That he is being “Judgemental” to the victims of “Sexual Abuse” and “Spiritual Abuse” by calling this a “Feeding Frenzy” and calling us The Minions of the enemy of our souls.

Whether Dan knows it or NOT – He sounds and acts much like these “Spiritually Abusive” “Power Hungry ”guys who just want to silence their critics and marginalize the comments of those they “Abuse.”

People need to put their big girl or boy panties/boxers on and deal with it. If you’re right, good. If your wrong, all the better, you’ve learned something new. And ya didn’t even have to pay for that. How cool is that!

I cannot even tell you how much I’ve learned from comments people leave. Good grief, if this is all about “I’ve got it together here”, then I’m done. I’m closing the blog down right now.

  42. Amos – I just checked out his blog. I forgot that I had commented over there several days ago. I saw a lot of your comments. Are you sure they are gone? BTW, I removed some of your comments you copied and pasted over here so as to clean up the place a bit.

It was the last comment that was “edited” by B4B.

And you just deleted the full comment that was posted here – LOL

    Thanks – but I still have a copy…
And thanks I “don’t need to repent with” Julie Anne. 😉

it was just interesting – The one comment I wanted seen, kept on the internet…
to rub a little salt in B4B’s wounds – gets deleted by you. 😉

    How funny is that… 🙂

And I’m thinking it was more than snarky – Vindictive comes to mind now…

    So I repent…

And ask Jesus to forgive me – for attempting to wound one of His Children – Dan.

And ask Dan – Please forgive me…

Seems that comment was already messy. 🙂

And – I liked what you said about that mysterious “Trinity.”
Just haven’t had time to comment on that thread today.

  48. Also note that the ORIGINAL statement was different from the REVISED statement which removed the thing about no accusations being made against Mahaney

from Detwiler’s post on the subject here
    http://www.brentdetwiler.com/brentdetwilercom/correspondence-sent-to-77-national-leaders-statement-by-moth.html
    *******************
“No such accusation of direct wrongdoing was ever made against C.J. Mahaney. Instead, he was charged with founding a ministry and for teaching doctrines and principles that are held to be true by vast millions of American evangelicals” — had been removed from the statement. This is how the new version reads: “A Christian leader, charged with any credible, serious, and direct wrongdoing, would usually be well advised to step down from public ministry. We believe this lawsuit failed that test.”

However, the date on the statement remained May 23. No reference to an update was included on the changed statement.
